Bored on the graveyard

Just wondering if theres anyone else of us who works nightshifts?

If you do, or have in the past, what was the job? Did you like or dislike working graveyards? How  long have you (or did you) been working nights? What was the best part of working overnight?

Re: Bored on the graveyard

  • What was the job?: I work at a homeless shelter...so mostly on the night shift I get laundry done, wake up the grumpys in the morning and make them leave then clean up after them before I go home.

Did you like or dislike working graveyards? I like the actual work part, I hate that I have 1 a week so I never get into a routine and they make me supppper tired.

How long have you (or did you) been working nights? Picked up the odd one here and there since october, scheduled since the beginning of april.

What was the best part of working overnight? For 6 out of the 8 hours...most people are sleeping, so its pretty quiet and I don't have to deal with clients...(some nights that isnt the case though!)

  • H has worked 3rd shift for the majority of the past 5 years. Whenever I tell people H works 3rd they always react like it's a terrible thing, but it actually works well for us. With his current schedule he's (supposed) to work 4-12 hour shifts and then have 4 nights off. So I don't really see him the days he works, but then have 4 days together when he's off. I think he'd tell you the best part is not having to deal with the customers! I think the best part will be when we have kids, because it will give me 4 nights a week to actually sleep!

I worked 3rd occassionally in college when I worked at a 24 hour grocery store and then until 3 or 4am when I worked at a late night diner. I wasn't for too long, so it wasn't so bad.

  • What was the job?
When I was working at the Science Center in St. Louis, I worked with community programs, which could include working the scouting and/or family overnights.  We'd have kids and families come spend the night in the museum, and we'd do little science projects with them. We were allowed to nap on our breaks, but when I was acting manager, I wasn't allowed to sleep.

Did you like or dislike working graveyards?
I think I would like working overnights while actually working, but I don't think I would like the disruption in my life, or being on a completely different schedule than everyone else!

How  long have you (or did you) been working nights?
I worked there for 2 years, I think?  I probably would still be there if I hadn't had to come home.

What was the best part of working overnight?
For me, most of the fun was the job itself, and just being in the SC at night... and hanging out with my co-workers and getting paid for it... etc.  :)

  • What was the job?: I was working as an engineer during some construction on a nuclear plant.  We reviewed questions from craft and problems that arose during construction.  Unfortunately it was mostly paperwork because nuclear is nothing but paperwork.

Did you like or dislike working graveyards? I actually really enjoyed it.  The night crew was way more laid back and we had a good time.  Plus it was in the south in the middle of the summer so we got to miss the super hot midday sun.  The only part I really didn't like was that I felt disconnected from reality.  I had NO idea what was going on during "normal people hours"

How long have you (or did you) been working nights? I worked that job 5-6 nights a week (12 hour shifts) for about 8 weeks.  (it was supposed to be a short 2 week assignment, but it's never that easy  lol)

What was the best part of working overnight? The crew I worked with was awesome and it wasn't SUPER hot at night like it was during the day.
