Taking baby to dentist

When did you take your kids to the dentist for the first time? D just sprouted his first tooth (late bloomer, takes after both of his parents), but I'm seeing places online that say you should take them by their first birthday.

I was just wondering this. DS will be 1 in a few days and he has 8 already and has a few more coming. I'm thinking he should go soon but I also know it is going to be a miserable experience so I'm not in a huge rush :-(

Anna just went for her first visit so not until age 2, I asked when I was there six months ago with the boys and that is what doc recommended. The exam was really simple, just counting teeth, plaque check, no x-rays though. The office I visit does a lap visit, she sits facing me and the doc sat knee to knee with me and she laid back, not as scary as sitting on the big chair alone

Ditto. My pediatrician just told us between 3 and 4. We'll go for the first time with Emma sometime this year.

Check to see what your dentist says. Mine said that they don't really need to see him before 2 if I keep up with brushing every night.

The dentist I take Danica and Hunter to says at 1 year old. 3 or 4 is pretty late, IMO.

Yep. I was surprised when our dentist said that. She said actually it should be when they cut their first tooth but you can push it out until their 1st birthday at the latest.

oops we are already almost 7 months late then!!! he got his fist two teeth at 5.5 months/3.5 months adjusted!

I wouldn't sweat it. Just go whenever you can. No biggie. I thought first tooth was crazy, myself. I didn't do first tooth/teeth, but I did take her at 1 year. I mean, she did have a bunch of teeth, so I thought why not just get them checked quick? Plus I'm hoping she'll get used to going to the dentist that way.

ETA: I know bottle rot and damage from sippy cups and binkies can happen early on which is another reason why I wanted to get her checked.

I feel like pedi's are so inconsistent about this. My daughter's doc said b/n 2-3 so we're gearing up soon.

We went right at two, at the suggestion of the pedi. FWIW, both my pedi and my pedi dentist poo poo'd the whole "go at age one thing".

My uncle is a dentist, he said they should go with you to one of your cleaning appts around 1 year old just to get used to the dentist, but that it's not until more like 15-18mo when they start getting the molers that it's necesary for them to go. If they go sooner, it's more of a familiarity thing and all the dentist does is brush their teeth with them.
