RV renting and carseats?

We have a family reunion with the in-laws waaaaaay up in northern Manitoba next summer and we were toying with the idea of renting an RV to make the 1000 mile one way trip a little easier on my terrible little car riders. Air travel is out of the question as tickets are $1350 a piece. We would split the cost of the RV with my SIL and BIL and also my MIL. So we would have 5 adults and 5 kids aged 12, 8, 4, 3, and 2. Does anyone know the regulations on car seats in RVs? I can't find any definite info online. Is it even possible with that many kids?

We dont rent but rather have a 24 ft camper. It holds 6 and you would not want more in there. The max I saw for cruise America rentals is 7. The FAQ section talks a little about car seats. My guess even with the larger campers is that 12 is too many.
  • How many children are in seats?

My guess is it's not going to be possible. Any car seat would need to be on a forward-facing seat (not side or rear-facing seats). RVs also present a lot of issues with projectiles (things in cabinets, etc.) so you have to keep that in mind as well when transporting so many children in an RV.

I'm not even sure 10 people could legally ride in an RV together? Even some of the bigger RVs I've been in don't have enough seating for 10?

  • we own a 40ft diesel pusher RV and it has10 seatbelt. We do not allow any child or adult to ride in the RV that is not properly in a car seat or seatbelt. It is extremely hard to find an RV with that many seatbelts! I would call RV rental places and ask if they have a unit that would accommodate that many driving down the road.  As far as projectiles go we make sure that we pack anything that a sharp or heavy in the downlow compartments so if there was ever a situation where there was an accident or something they would not fly out of the cabinet and injure someone. I must admit it is an amazing way to travel with small children there are so many conveniences that being inside the RV provide! We always have lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the fridge along with drinks and snacks! Not to mention it is wonderful not having to use a public restroom when traveling :) have a fun trip! Maybe consider renting two smaller ones and following each other I'm sure there are some wonderful RV parks or national parks you could stay at while there.  You Will save lots of money on food because you can eat at the RV as opposed to eating out every meal!
