Anyone have any kennel recs in the west? Specifically they have to take large breed dogs.
Secondly, Deuce is 3 and has never been to a kennel before. Typically when we leave he stays with my parents, but we want to go to Idlewild with my parents, and were thinking of kenneling him over night.
DH is concerned that boarding him would be too stressful. At home he sometimes howls when we leave because he wants to come with us, but I imagine he stops after a few minutes because the neighbors have never complained. After he makes a quick tour through the house to see if he can get into the cat food and verifies that there is no food left in Nolan's high chair, he lays down on the couch.
Thoughts?
Our other option would be for us to just go for the day.
Re: Kennel Recs/dog owner question
No recs in the area but for 1 night I wouldn't worry too much. He's done ok with being left at your parents? I'd see how it goes and then you will know for the future. Hopefully he does well and they can let you know that and you won't be too worried the next time.
We just adopted our dog in August and had to board her for 2 weeks in February. But the trip was already planned and nobody could take her. I was so stressed because she had so recently been adopted. I worried she thought we left her. But it was fine. She survived and didn't have any issues. We boarded her 1 night recently and again I was stressed but they said she did great.
some places have options for more interaction with people and other dogs. Maybe you could do that so that he wouldn't feel so lonely. Like for our 2 weeks we did it with the trainer we took class from and had her do some 1 on 1 training so she could have some more interaction. And other places I've looked at have doggie playtime, etc....if he would do ok with that.
When we go to Idlewild we just do a day trip. So I never had to consider the dogs care while we were away.
Just remember if you board him you will need to get him the kennel cough vaccine a few weeks in advance so it has time to take effect, if you don't already have it done yearly.
We never boarded any of our dogs, we usually have someone stay at our house (two large breeds=expensive). But I am with Amanda, make sure to call your vet because I believe the first time they get the vaccination it is a series then a yearly booster.
But when we did consider it, we looked into Paws Here Awhile in Georgetown. because they don't cage. but it was like $100 for each of them because Bruce is 125 lbs and Murphy was 95 lbs.

There is also a Camp Bow Wow in Greentree (by the post office). My sister uses a kennel that specializes in large breeds for their SharPei but it is in Cranberry.
Thanks ladies--He does have his kennel cough vaccine. It actually expires June 21st and we were planning on going the 15th, so we would have been covered.
I just found out DH can't go this weekend, so it's going to be me and the kids and he'll stay with the dog. But I'm glad I'm looking into this now, because I will likely need this info when we go to Disney in October.
Kris--I like the paws here awhile. Maybe we'll have to try it out for a day, since they have daycare and see how he does.
Thanks!
