Re: Hopeless Book Discussion (Spoilers)

  • In the beginning I thought it was yet another "shetlered, naive girl meets/falls in love with bad boy".  I'm kind of getting sick of this theme.  And I did, and do, find when he ran and "just go happened" to stop in front of his house just too much.

And then around her flashbacks started, I WAS HOOKED!  Oh my goodness So good.

In the end, I loved this book and the characters.  I felt the way they handled it was more "real" and how I would have acted than most books are.  My heart broke when I realized the "mom" was the aunt and they could heal together.  Oh and the dad killing himself - WHOA just whoa.  I can't even imagine the trauma Sky/Hope and Holder felt due to that.   Then Holder finding out why his sister commited suicide... I really can't wait for the next book and learning more about him.

  • It was a little "twilighty" in the beginning with Holder's mood swings.  It didn't take long for me to get completely hooked though.  I was scared that he was going to be some mess of a guy that she was going to "fix."  I find that theme in books very annoying, and I think it only feeds into the idea that girls think they can actually fix a guy.  Or that they need to find a guy that's "broken" or some nonsense.  I was pleased when it wasn't like that at all!
It was obvious pretty early on for me that her dad was a sick pervert.  Her having been kidnapped though shocked me.  It was so believeable that a sexually abused child would end up in foster care, that I didn't even think about other possibilities.  I'm usually really good at figuring out twists before they happen, so when a book tricks me I really enjoy it.
The scene where Sky and Holder first have sex I was seriously in tears.  That scene was so emotional, I was blubbering at like 1 AM, on my couch, because I couldn't put the book down.
I really liked the characters and am looking forward to getting to know them all better in book two!
  • I was hooked as soon as Holder mentioned that thought Sky looked like someone he used to know. I had a good idea that he was going to be somehow related to her past.

I found the part about Sky not knowing how to email or use technology a bit unrealistic. She was over at Six's house a lot, she would have picked that up. I also believe she would have been much more clued into social media, etc.

I wished the author would have exlpored Breckin's character a little more. I feel like he was a bit underdeveloped and didn't really contribute much to the plot.

The raw emotion that was conveyed when Holder found out about the dad abusing his sister was powerful! For me, it really helped the book come full circle.

    I'm excited for book two!

Yes, I felt the same way.

  • I thought this was a great book.  I also thought that Sky not knowing how to use any technology was a bit of a stretch.  I thought that Holder was going to be a drug addict for sure.  When I first read about his tattoo, I just thought that he was a depressed kid on drugs.  When I found out the true meaning of it, I was floored.  I was such a great twist in the book.

I was almost happy when her father killed himself.  I feel like if he was alive, he would have done everything in his power to convince people that she was brainwashed by her aunt.  I mean he was a police chief and all.  I think that it brought closure in a way.

I almost don't want a sequel book.  I guess it's because I don't know where you can go from here.  I just picture the two of them being together for a while and eventually breaking up.  I know that it is sad, but I do see how much they love each other but I don't feel like they would end up together forever.

  • It's been long enough since i read it I've forgotten some details! I was always so frustrated when he wouldn't kiss her!!! I just wanted him to kiss her! Ahh! I loved the characters completely. I figured out that she was abused during the first flashback. I thought that her dad was a little quick to kill himself. While it didn't bother me, is it realistic to believe he'd make that decision in less than 5 minutes?

(sorry if there are errors, I'm on my phone!)

  • I agree about the friend.  I enjoyed him, but maybe they'll be more in the second book.

I think he had 13 years to think about what if his daughter came back...

  • I just saw this today on Goodreads.  Here's a teaser for book 2: http://colleenhoover.com/2013/06/04/how-about-a-little-teaser/

I really hope this book isn't just the entire first book told from Holder's POV.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it's going to be.
