hi everyone!
I am from OK. my H and I were recently affected by the May 20 and May 31 tornadoes that went through the metro. we have had our roof looked at by a contractor and by our insurance. we got our claim and estimates back from insurance, and it doesn't seem enough (to our naive eyes) to get everything fixed that we need to. we are both unsure on what to do next. I was hoping to get some advice from others who have been there and done that with insurance and roof/house issues.
normally, I would ask my parents to help guide us, but I have a very dysfunctional relationship with my dad. I've been in counseling about this, and my counselor, H, and I all agree that having my dad involved would not be healthy. so we are left without someone to help us figure out what to do.
thanks in advance!
Re: unsure about insurance and new roof/fence/gutters
I'm so sorry you are dealing with this! I don't have any advice other than to maybe get another estimate from another contractor. If they both are higher than what insurance is offering, then call insurance back and see if you can negotiate. I know for our homeowners insurance something like that would probably end up falling under the 'act of nature/hurricane' clause that we have (and I believe is pretty common in my area anyways) where you have a higher deductible for those types of claims. That may be why it seems low.
thanks, Vikings! we will get another contractor out to take a look. the deductible was 1%, but I know the majority of roofers around here do the paperwork so we aren't out the deductible. I'm not sure how, but I've heard several times that it's common and we should find another roofer if ours won't do it. so that will be helpful.
I appreciate the response!

Get another estimate.
The insurance company will negotiate based on the estimates, but your 1% deductible will still apply to your claim.
Also ask what type of coverage you have on your roof. If it is replacement cost coverage, then they should be covering the repair in full, minus your 1% deductible. If you have ACV (Actual Cash Value) coverage, then they will do a depreciated value on the roof (i.e. 15 year old roof, 20 year shingles = 75% depreciation off the estimate), then minus your 1% deductible.

Several years back when our roof was damaged because of a hurricane the insurance company tried to low-ball us. The roofer offered to meet with the insurance adjuster and I had them both come back to look at the roof together. That worked great and the insurance company ended up paying for the full amount (with the exception of our deductible of course).
I also had one other estimate that was higher than the contractor I wanted to use (although they were fairly close in price) as backup for the cost of the roof work.
