There was a national survey done of American dialects and how we pronounce certain words or use specific words to describe something (i.e., soda/pop/coke). My personal favorite was the hoagie/sub map (#64), but they are pretty interesting

Warning: this is a time suck.
Re: Dialect Survey Maps
I have already gotten into it with people about SEERRUP versus SIRRUP.
HOAGIE! IT'S A HOAGIE! A SUB IS AN UNDERWEAR VESSEL, AND A HERO IS ADMIRED FOR THEIR QUALITIES!
Yes, who the heck calls them tennis shoes?
I'm surprised the pronunciation of 'ruin' isn't on there (although, I'm sure there are many more). I say 'ru-in'. My stepdad, who is from NEPA, says 'roon'.

Another one that would only apply regionally - jimmies vs. sprinkles.
For the record, it's jimmies.

This thing was spot on for me for where I grew up (northern Va) except I say crawfish not crayfish. That's the influence of living in NOLA for 7 years.
Yall Philadelphians have some weird pronunciations and contractions. How about youse? Everyone knows its ya'll.
reminds me of when I first moved to NYC and some guy was making fun if me for saying y'all and then he said "youse guys" thick Brooklyn accent and all and I burst out laughing at him. I can still remember his face, he had no idea.
YES! Thank you!

Speaking as one who was born and raised in the NE, it is a whole other ball game up there. Buncha weirdos, myself included.
My roommate at UMASS was from Chicago and called them tennis shoes or "tennies". She'd make fun of me for calling them sneakers and I'd make fun of her for calling soda "pop" and we'd make fun of all the Massachusetts people for calling water coolers "bubblers".
A bubbler is a water bong.
Raises hand
I also say sub and pop. ftr, where I grew up, the only sandwich shop we have is subway. There is no comparison between subway and a real hoagie place though, so I think it is fine. I hate subway now that I've moved out here.

I love these. I keep finding new ones to think about.
It has also confirmed DH's statement that I say "crayon" weird/wrong.
I was surprised orange isn't on there. I say it completely different than my family. Maybe one of us just says it wrong.
It is totally a sub!!! You go to subway and not hoagieway right????
Im from berks co. They need their own color for a lot of these. It's a whole different language!!!
I went to school in Berks county...I agree haha!!!
