Melts my heart

In my weekend post I said how Lilly wanted to call papaw George - my dad.  Dad is still bragging to everyone that Lilly wanted to talk to HIM.  He did ask Jeff to trade his daughter for me when Jeff asked to marry me...

Lilly also usually asks to talk to Hunter on the phone. Actually she's been begging her mom for a dog... just like Hunter.  Well, this time when she asked to talk to him, I got treats to get him howling.  She'd say "what's he saying?" and I'd be like Hunter says "Hi Lilly!" etc.  She was so excited.

MIL said Ryan was packing some toys and movies in his backpack to come here and was going "I'm going to Maryland, I'm going to see daddy and Amanda" over and over again.  Melts my heart that 1. he's so excited to come up and 2. he includes me.  It's not just daddy, it's Daddy and Amanda.  LOVE!  He kind of freaked when his mom came and he wasn't going to MD right then.

I probably went over board, but I got a bunch of food from them to eat, and new outfits, toys and stuff to play outside.  I got Lilly some sight words flashcards and books since she's struggling to read a bit (not sure if I mentioned on here, but her mama wanted to hold her back in the 1st grade, because she was, but school doesn't want to).  Hopefully ex sticks to her word and Jeff can start skyping and  can practice the flashcards and have her read to him/us.

This is all so sweet!  But my favorite part about being a stepmom is when I'm included too!  The other day Grant was saying about how he is going to be the bravest person in the whole wide world and be braver than Jeremy...then says I'll even be braver than Erin...then mentioned his mom.  It's the little moments like that that are the best :)

And I really hope you are able to Skype with the kids soon.  We don't Skype with Grant because we talk to him on the phone twice a week, but we do use it when we're in TX to talk to Jeremy's parents and its great.  We will probably start skyping once the baby is here though, since he won't see the baby until he/she is 3 months old :( I don't know you're whole story, but it breaks my heart that Jeff can't talk to them on the phone when they are at home.  Hopefully things do change for you!

Have a great time with the kids...maybe you can just forget to take them back :)

I think non-stepmoms think I'm crazy, but that seriously made my week.  Besides the ex, I love how well everyone has "blended".  My parents love Jeff's kids as their own grandkids... they will be with us everyday while they are here, I love it!  Going into this I really though I'd be an outside with his kids, but they really accepted me from the start.  They were younger, L was 4 and R was 5 when I first met them, so I think that helped.  I really realized it, when L got sick last summer and would cry for me, not dad.  Jeff was a little butthurt, but I told him, when you're sick you want your mom, and I'm just glad I can be the next best thing when they are with us!

It's becoming more and more clear, it's the ex's new husband that won't let Jeff talk to his kids.  Sometimes if ex is alone with the kids and Jeff texts her asking how they are, she'll call and let him talk to them.  When the reading/grade thing went down 2 weeks ago, she said he can skype, but nothing yet.  I really want him to get a court order to include skype and/or phone calls.  I don't think it'll happen until then.  She promised phone calls, but it has to the the perfect storm above to happen.  He doesn't have ANYTHING through the courts and I really wish he will, esp with this ER bil coming to us... again.

Have a great time with the kids...maybe you can just forget to take them back :)

SO tempting!  She said we can have them longer next year, I'd love them from a month.  My parents offered to watch them while we worked and do fun things on weekends.

  • 1. I really dislike his ex! I wish that she would let Jeff be more involved like he wants to be.

    2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post. I love how much they love you. It's the sweetest thing.

You and I can chat about reading if you want.  I am a reading specialist ;) Google "Dolch Sight Words" and that will give you a good list of words she should know. These are words she cannot sound out- rather has to know immediately. Flash cards you buy can be good, but making your own from the Dolch list is your best bet.

A fun game to play with flash card words (to make it a game) is put them on popsicle sticks. Take a few sticks and write the word 'bang' instead of a sight word. Put all the sticks in a cup, word side down. Each person picks a stick and if they can read the word they get to keep the stick. If you pick a 'bang' you have to put your sticks back. Depending on how long you want to play and how many words you know the first person to get _____ sticks wins. Make sure she almost knows most of the words you put in, and once she masters her almost words a few more words can be added.

If you want more activities to do while she's here, let me know!

STEPH! I didn't know you were a reading specialist!!!  Anything that will help will be great.  I heard of Dolch Sight Words from another teacher friend.  I just found the flashcards for $2.50 and thought it was a start...  I always think I have more time then BAM time up!

I'll look up those words and make the game for sure!  I'm sure I can get popsicle sticks from Walmart. Do they have it by grade?  So we can start with K words, and move up to 1st?  I'll let her take them home and maybe on if her older new step-siblings will play with her... lord knows her mama don't have time for that!

Seriously, if you have time for more ideas, sent them my way!  I just wish they were closer to be able to help more.  Actually Jeff asked if we could have her for a year to help catch her up, nope, then he asked for a month or two this summer, nope... so we are trying what we can.
