Pittsburgh SNAP challenge

I thought this was interesting...they were talking about it on the radio this morning and I checked it out online when I got in to the office. Some folks at the Post Gazette are participating in the SNAP challenge this week. Where they live off of what a single person on food stamps in this area would be allotted for the week, which is $30.   That's $6 a day (Mon-Fri for the challenge). Do you think you could live off of $6 a day?   Going out to lunch costs almost $10! Here's the link to the blog of their experience.

Re: Pittsburgh SNAP challenge

  • i saw this. i guess i have no idea how the program works because all i know is that i can stand behind someone with a HUGE cart full of lobster tail, filet and everything else that we can only buy on special occasions and then watch them pay with their access card. maybe it breaks down to $6/day, but i seriously don't believe that any of them are starving day to day by any means.

  • I guess the people using EBT near me must really have the poorz because I've never seen this happen - I always thought that was an urban legend.   Although, I'm sure the more family members the more the amount you're given goes up.  The $30 is for one single adult.
  • Last night at our neighborhood market I bought the following for $34. It doesn?t seem like a lot for one person to eat for a whole week. (Admittedly, the market might not have the best prices, but for someone without a car there might not be a lot of choice when it comes to which grocery store you shop at.)

    1 box of cereal

    1 loaf of bread

    Half gallon of 2% milk

    1 jar of pasta sauce

    1 bunch of bananas

    ? lb deli ham

    ? lb deli cheese

    2 pieces of gum

    1 package of tortillas

    3 pears

    1 cucumber

    1 head of lettuce

FWIW, I know that there are people who ?take advantage? of government assistance. But I also know that there are a lot of people who barely get by and who would not get by without it. And from experience being on unemployment, I can tell you that it truly sucks to depend on a bloated, burocratic government agency for money. There were at least three times in the 14 months I received it that my unemployment check didn?t show up as expected. Lucky for me, we weren?t living month to month?but I can only imagine how trapped someone would feel if they had no food in their kitchen and their access card didn?t work when they went to the grocery store. I?m just saying that for every story of someon buying lobster with an access card there are probably 10 stories of people that do not have the safety nets that most of us do.

If I was able to start with a pantry stocked with the basics, like ketchup, flour, sugar, oil, etc, it wouldn't be so bad, but to have to start with absoultely nothing and try to eat for a week of $6 a day and then attempt to build up a stockpile of necessitis, now that would be difficult. And ditto Amy on not necessarily having a choice of stores. The idea of bussing 60 minutes each way and dragging all the groceries home is not enjoyable, I'm betting a lot of grocery shopping happens at the corner drug store, with extra high grocery prices.

I agree. I have had to depend on the government for unemployment and it is horrible. I also know that there is a lot of working poor who do go to work every day but need a hand making ends meet. Don't get me wrong, I used to see people buy crazy crap with their access cards but that isn't everyone.

And people also complain that people on government assistance are overweight. Well, it is expensive to eat healthy. Your money goes a lot farther buying pasta and white bread then buying salad and fish.

I do love the fact that the state is offering vouchers for the local farmers markets. I know that WIC has done this for a while and I think it is a good thing.

  • i must be in the minority because i have had to rely on UC several times and had no problems with it, nor did it really suck by any means. and we couldn't live on one income, so it wasn't like losing my income was NBD.

living on mt washington for several years showed me far too many people going through the check out line with their loaded carts of higher end goods and handing over their access card. it wasn't a one time experience. it was actually very common for us to witness such a situation.
