Husband Inherited a house, not a dream

Hi all!

I am brand spanking new to being married, and this is my first Nest post!

I wanted to get your advice because I can already see trouble starting regarding where my husband and I will be living.

To start, my husband and I both live abroad in Tokyo (so there are some differences with housing issues, but the same concerns are probably still applicable).  We are in the same neighborhood, with me in an apartment and him in a house.  His house is actually his baby/childhood home, and he inherited it from his father, who passed away last year.  As we just got married, it is sort of expected that I would live in the house with him (for financial reasons, not cultural reasons).  But, to be honest, I really don't like that house.  It is old and on a very busy street with lots of sound.  The interior is very dated and lacks sunlight.  It smells, it has super low doorways that I hit my head on (this is Japan, so things are J-sized), and the upstairs has a squat toilet (again, Japan :p )

I told him that I wanted to live somewhere else, but this is his childhood home and he is so attached to it.  Then, we had the bright idea of renovation, but he keeps waffling between parts to renovate and not to renovate, and whether to renovate at all.  Basically, we are at a standstill.

Have any of you ever experienced this issue, i.e., your SO inherited a house or wanted to live in his/her childhood home?

Any advice of what to do would be so greatly appreciated!

Re: Husband Inherited a house, not a dream

  • I think the best thing for you to do is for each of you to go around the house separately, and make a list of things that you would like changed in each room.  Once you have both completed that list, sit down and compare them.  Make the things that you both have written down priorities, and then discuss your differences.  Keep in mind, and maybe you will need to persuade your DH a bit, improvements and renovations to the house will need to be made with resale in mind.  Think about the cosmetic issues and the bigger ones as well. Which will you profit from in the long run, and which are just personal preference. I don't know what the market is like in Tokyo, so I'm of no help there, but I think that if you need help figuring out what is most important to homebuyers in the area, you could call a real estate agent and ask, just so you have a general idea of the improvements that are most worthy for your area.

Talk with him about what he will not stand to change and what he is open to changing.  You will need to make this place somewhere that you both want to be.
