Third Round, what to ask

I am on my third interview for a company and hopefully it is the last round. For the first I met with the director of the company in person. It was a regular interview. For the second I met with the person that would be my immediate supervisor. For this round, I will now have a phone interview with the director again and in the message I received it said it was my chance to interview him. What does that mean and what do I ask him? I am really confused as to how to proceed.

  • If you haven't already, inquire about the work environment. Ask any salary questions or concerns you have. Ask to be provided information on the benefits package (if they haven't already been provided in advance). One of my favorite questions is usually "what would a typical day consist of for me in this role?" - Don't just make it about you, ask the director about his experiences with the company (obviously not asking him to bad mouth, but just ask some polite questions - "what has been your favorite project to work on" etc.).

    This is your opportunity to really get a feel for if the culture of the job is a right fit with you. I've been offered jobs that I've turned down because the corporate culture doesn't jive well with me.

  • Entropic has provided some excellent advice. Before I got to the end of her response I was going to recommend asking about culture, because it is the aura that surrounds you all day and it needs to be a good fit.

    I'd also ask questions about potential other options, like is telecommuting an option when you are unable to come to work?  You can explain it's not an expectation of yours, but that it is an option at other jobs (not sure what you do or whether your job can be done from home).

    I'd also ask (if it hasn't been divulged) why did your predecessor leave (if you are a replacement employee). I'd ask about turnover because that can be a key indicator the company is difficult to work for or doesn't keep promises, or they are too demanding for the pay scale.

    To be honest, I'd ask questions that I'd ask if I got into a conversation with someone who works there and it was a confidential inquiry. If they are leaving this open for you to make these inquiries, it's obvious they want to have you be informed before making an offer.

  • I would ask what they like best and least about their job.
  • I have also used this: "Tell me about what an average day for you."
  • Definitely ask about how they see the position evolving over the next few years, would you have room to grow in your role, is there a direct promotion path or is it more horizontally structured, etc.

    Good luck and don't psych yourself out :)  I don't think there are right and wrong questions on this one.

    What a laugh.

    Just what are they looking for???? Amazing....sheerly and simply amazing.

    I once interviewed for a company with an 8-step interview process...one step included taking a personality test. I got the job offer but they offered me something different than what I interviewed for, and I decided against taking it.
