send those vibes this way---

since all of you post about getting jobs and how the good vibes from our board seem to be helping....

SEND H SOME!!! lol he needs a job and has had no luck!

seriously he does! its driving me crazy! he is so smart and has a masters degree and has not been able to get a freaking job! no one will give him a break! it sucks trying to break into a new field these days! his undergrad degree is secondary education... he taught for awhile and decided it wasn't for him so he went back to school while he worked where we are now ( a restaurant ) and substituted on his days off! He got his Masters in Business/ Finance but he has no experiance <sp> in the field  no one will hire him! it's the worst either you have to much experiance <sp> these days or not enough!!!!

oh p.s. apparently i cant spell tonight- no matter how i write that word its telling me its wrong so i just gave up! oops!

Re: send those vibes this way---

  • Good luck to your H! Has he tried working with temp agencies or recruiters? I don't know where you live, but most areas have them. He might have to work his way from the bottom, but he could get a feel for the areas of business he wants to be in that way and figure out what he definitley doesn't want to do.

Let me know if you want some recommendations and where you live, I used to work in the staffing and recruiting business.

  • Sending good vibes!!  Good luck!
  • Good luck to him!!! I'm sure you've searched everywhere, but when I was trying to find jobs for H, I used indeed.com to find them for him to apply to. I encouraged him to apply to all of them, even if they wanted a little bit of experience that he didn't have. I agree with PP, see if he can get on at a staffing/temp company!! That might really help :)

  • Sending good vibes!!!

I know how you and your H feel. I'm finishing my Ph.D., but I don't want a career in academia or at the lab bench (the traditional Ph.D. jobs). I want to work in D.C. doing science policy/advocacy. However, when I look for jobs, I'm either ridiculously over qualified (they're looking for someone with a B.S. degree) or I don't have enough "real work" experience. I know that many Ph.D. skills are very transferable to the real world, but a lot of employers don't understand that : /

This is frustrating!  I swear finding a job is the hardest job in the world.  Good luck to you in the future.  Getting a Ph.D. is way too much work to put in to be told you don't have enough "real work" experience.  What is you Ph.D. for, meaning what field?

  • Good luck to your H!

I know how he feels, my H was in a similar situation for 2 years.  After a little over a year he got a temp job that was sort of in his field, then after a year and a half there, he got his current job, which is actually in his field.

Keep being persistent, even with the temp avenue.  My H had a lot of luck using Craig's List.  I had to force him to look there, but he got more call backs and interviews from Craig's List than he ever did using other websites.  He found his current job on Craig's List.
