Thank you gift for references?

If someone writes you a recommendation for a job, is it customary to send something as a thank you? I mean, more than a thank-you note? If so, what?

Re: Thank you gift for references?

  • I never have done anymore than thank them. I am interested to see what other say.

  • Dh just did this last week for his references for MBA school. But he was close to them outside of work as well, so it was easier. He made it a combo "happy holidays/thank you gift" so it wasn't as strange just in case they didn't like the idea of getting a gift for the reference.
  • oh and to actually answer your question as opposed to simply talking about myself...I don't think you need to. I would write a thank you note, but thats all.
  • A thank-you note would be a lovely gesture.  That said, I've done several references and never gotten more than a thanks by email or in person.  I don't expect anything, b/c it's not really that much of an imposition.  I won't say yes to being a reference to anyone I'm not enthusiastic about.
  • I've never given a thank-you gift to references. A thank-you note would be nice though. A gift almost feels like bribery ("say something nice about me, and I'll give you this lovely bottle of wine!"). I know it's NOT bribery, but it feels weird to me for some reason.
