Midwest summer vacation destinations?
We are looking for a place to drive this summer, possibly around late July or early August. We live in Central Wisconsin so we are a little bored with the usual Wisconsin Dells or Milwaukee destinations.
Does anyone have any ideas of some places that are fun for a couple without children?
Re: Midwest summer vacation destinations?
There's a lot to see in Michigan
I just saw an article about the top 10 little beach towns in the world, and Silver Lake Dunes in Michigan was in that top 10. It looks like it's about an hour north of Grand Rapids, and they recommended a small resort, I think it was called Silver Dunes Resort?
For anything in Michigan just go to www.michigan.org. That's the Pure Michigan travel website. Mackinac Island is lovely, no cars, you take a ferry to the island. The Grand Hotel is gorgeous, but pricey. Worth one night's stay though. In the UP there are the Taquemenon Falls (not sure of the spelling). The drive there is boring, but once you get there it's lovely. We went further north to Whitefish Point, which has a museum about the Edmund Fitztgerald and ships that have sunk.
We like driving vacations, so for our HM we flew to San Fran and rented a convertible and drove down the Pacific Coast Hwy all the way to San Diego. We have said we'd love to do it around Michigan's lakeshore.
Also, check out www.midwestliving.com. They always have a wonderful travel section about every midwest state.
Good luck.
Minneapolis/St. Paul- Mall of America, IKEA, Waterpark of America, Art Museum, ect
Duluth, MN- Beautiful shores, light house, fishing, Canal park, hiking,
We really are down for anything. We tend to take a lot of weekend trips where we go to museums, a little shopping, sightseeing, etc. Our honeymoon was spent in Bayfield, WI and we loved the break from the world the slower paced vacation gave us.
I think my limit might be about an 8-10 hour drive. We could be gone for up to a week and we are flexible on the days we can leave.
St. Louis and Chicago are my two favorite "short trip" places. St. Louis has a great night life, wonderful shopping, forest park, botanical gardens...all very easy to navigate and nothing is very expensive/ a lot is free.
Chicago has about everything
My sister lives in NW Indiana between Chicago and South Bend and there is so much to do in that area, including Chicago, if you want to experience the city life, or New Buffalo, MI, which is a really quaint little beach resort town, or the Indiana Dunes which also has great beaches. Chicago is one of my favorite cities and I especially love how it comes to life at night. There are a lot of nice affordable hotels right in the center of everything.
For a week, I would recommend Michigan.
For a weekend or few days, then I would recommend Galena, IL. Gorgeous!!! You stay in B&B's, there's a bunch of little shops, hiking, wineries, horseback riding (so worth it), and golfing. It is a cute little town that caters to tourism, but isn't overpopulated with tourist traps. It is definitely a place to go without children.
