I finally have a moment to actually sit at the computer and say hello to everyone! I lurk from my phone just about everyday but it isn't the easiest to post from.
I had Caden on June 5th and I am so in love with him. He is such a good baby and is doing really well. I think we got super lucky with him!
For those who may be interested here is my birth story. (Its long!)
For the last 3 appointments of my pregnancy I would head to the doctor?s office, get checked out and eventually head over to labor and delivery to be monitored for high blood pressure. The first 2 times my blood pressure mellowed out and I was sent home to let this baby come on his own.
June 1st came and went and I still had no baby. I was starting to be uncomfortable but nothing out of control. I think the most annoying part was every time someone would see me they would say ?no baby yet?!? I was able to just smile and say nope, not yet. Our last doctor?s appointment was on June 4th and I was 40 weeks 3 days pregnant. As usual my blood pressure in the office was high 140(ish)/90(ish). This time I had a higher amount of protein in my urine so off to labor and delivery we went!
Labor and delivery was busy so I skipped being in triage and was placed in a postpartum room. Those beds were way more comfortable than triage and I had the luxury of killing time watching TV. They checked my urine and the hospital and showed no signs of protein (this should have made me happy but it frustrated me at the same time, I was ready to have this baby!). My blood pressure was still high, though not high enough to constitute an emergency thank goodness. My nurse for the evening was the same nurse who helped me the previous week with my 24 hour urine collection; she was surprised I was back and still pregnant! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
After having my blood pressure monitored or about 2 hours they called my on call doctor to let her know what was going on. The nurse came back in and said I was ok and baby was ok but the doctor said we could start an induction and get the ball rolling! As much as I was hoping this would be the outcome I have to say I was freaking out on the inside because it was really going to happen! I sent Matt to the car to get a few things so I could take a shower while he picked up my mom and went to check on the dogs.
After my shower I was moved to my labor and delivery room and killed some time until Matt and my mom arrived with my dinner. Once I was done eating they were going to start the induction. At 10pm the nurse checked my cervix and much to my surprise I was at 3cm! Only 4 hours ago at the doctor?s office I was only 1cm, apparently my body was ready to get the show started! Because I was already to a 3 they did not need to use the cydotec to get me to dilate. I was just given Pitocin and we called it a night.
Surprisingly I was able to sleep semi decently from 10 until 7 the next day. My doctor came in to check me at 7 and decided to break my water. Up until that point I was able to handle my contractions pretty easily but once my water broke I had to breathe through each one. I requested to have an epi shortly after they broke my water. The anesthesiaologsit arrived at 7:30 and gave me the epidural, that 30 minute wait was the roughest part of my labor. From 7:30 on though it was smooth sailing.
I let the nurse know around 9 that I was feeling pressure down below, she checked me and I had gone from a 3 to an 8 in just about 2 hours! I continued to doze, getting as much sleep as I could. Around 12 I was checked again and much to the nurses surprise I was a 10! We were ready to have this baby! The nurses had me do a few practice pushes to see how the baby responded and how well I did. After 2 contractions they called the doctor, who happened to be in the hospital and walked right into my room. They broke down the table/bed while the doctor got ready and then it was really time to push. I pushed through 2 contractions and that was all, my baby had arrived!
Caden Anthony arrived at 12:55pm on June 5th. I feel incredibly blessed by how easy of a labor I had with him. From start to finish it was about 14 hours long but I slept through most of it and had only a small amount of pain.
I've always heard on TV and in the movies how as a new mom you never knew you could love someone so much. Let me tell you how true that is. I just look at this boy and my whole heart melts. I cannot imagine not having him.
