Plant help

So, last year was our first spring and summer in our house.  We did a lot of landscaping and I planted a lot of things.  The only thing that I planted that came back this year were my Tiny Bee Lilies.  They met a brutal end, that DH claims must have been to bunnies.  I however, think it was either the weed whacker or there is some bunny orthodontist in our area, because those cuts are straightest "bites" I have ever seen!

I'm just looking for a little help with perennials.  I need some things that the combination of my black thumb and MN winters won't kill.  I realize there isn't much I can do about DH's weed whacking abilities, but I can at least give my plants a fighting chance.

Ideas?

Re: Plant help

  • What about bush-perennials like azaleas and rhododendrons?

    Anniversary

  • The previous owners planted mostly bushes.  They all came back.  I'm plannng on a few more bushes and then hopefully some tough flowers too.

  • I Googled "hardy perennials for Minnesota" and came up with this article http://www.ehow.com/facts_7717791_perennials-minnesota-wisconsin.html. They recommend things like Dwarf Dutch irises, daylilies and peonies for that area. Hope this helps :)

I looked around all weekend to see what my neighbors have planted in their yards.  A lot of people have these three things.  I actually got daring and bought a hydrangea.  MIL gave me one last year, and it was one of the few things that came back.  (Probably because she planted it.)  They are supposed to be really hard plants to grow, but here's hoping that since I got one to live, I can make more live!
