Date Night?

Do you have a date night? What do you do for it?

We have 8 kids between us, 4 are under 18yrs. My two ages 8 and 11 are with us six days a week. His two younger kids ages 13 and 16 are with us off and on. Wednesdays are our only night alone because it is when my two visit their dad. We don't tend to do much if anything though because money is tight. I'm not working right now cuz I'm finishing up my second year or nursing school. I try from time to time to come up with some cheap or free ideas like going to sit by the river at sunset or to eat (it's pretty down there) or going to play frisbee golf (we love it). However would appreciate some new ideas too :) We don't always feel the need to go out on Wednesday but it is nice to have an adult night alone away from home occasionally.  :)

Re: Date Night?

  • We don't have a scheduled date night, but we go out pretty regularly. We go out when one of us thinks of something that sounds fun - usually it's out to eat, or to get coffee or ice cream, but we go on walks together sometimes, and the other night we went mini golfing, which was pretty reasonably priced.

I love your frisbee golf idea! I'll have to see if we have a course nearby...

  • I like to tell people that we are DINKs so every night is date night!

Actually, though, we do have to make an effort to find interesting things to do, otherwise we end up going to the same restaurant over and over. There are a couple of online event listings that I pay attention to in order to find free or very inexpensive festivals or events. For example one of our farmers markets just came out with a "date night" where they have live music and dancing. Then there's a club that takes bike rides around the city once a month. So, with a little digging there can be a lot of fun stuff that doesn't cost anything or very little.

  • When money was tight (who am I kidding, it still is!) rather than waste money going out to eat, we would try new recipes at home.  Something different, maybe a little exotic.  We actually do this every Sunday and it's really fun!

Check out your township/municipality's website for free or cheap events taking place in your community.

If there are any local parks, hit it up!  Even if it's just a casual stroll, it's nice to get alone time.  And I'm sure with that many kids it would be welcome relief to relax and decompress once a week!

    Good luck!

  • There are lots of fun 'date night' type options that don't involve spending a lot of money. I definitely second going for long walks, to public parks, just walking around in any fun parts of town.

At home things include playing a board game, watching a movie marathon with popcorn, or getting naked and enjoying the empty house!

I think couples time is important. We don't have kids yet to distract us but I hope we can keep making time for the couplehood once we do.

  • Check Groupon in your area.  You may find deals on new restaurants or activities to try.

  • We grill at home. I do the prep, he does the grilling. We also try a new cocktail now and then. Fun and cheap!
  • My DH and I also love disk golf! I would say we very rarely go out on a "date night", but we hang out regularly. I just like spending quality time with him, whether it's going to the park to play disk golf, going on a bike ride, or cuddling on the couch watching some TV together.
