WWMMD? - Internet bill

Currently we are on a contract for our cable and internet until sept 30, 2014. With the contract we pay full price for cable and get 70% off our internet. It includes basic cable and 20g of internet data.  We are going over our internet data usage by a lot right now.  If we upgrade our internet to the next level it is 80g and our bill would be $73/month.  It currently is suppose to be about $55 (without going over)

The reason we are going over is because we got netflix.  We had a pvr up until 6 months ago but had borrowed it from my brother and he just moved so needed it back.  With our work schedules we are never home to watch prime time tv so we now only watch netflix and pretty much no cable.

We have talked about cancelling our cable all together and switching internet providers.  To get out of our contract is $20/month+tax. So about $350. The cheapest internet provider I have found is $25/mth for 75g + $45 set up fee + $100 to buy their modem.  Other providers are $40 for unlimited plus $4/mth for the modem +$50 set up fee.  I am not sure if it makes sense to pay out of the contract or just stick it out and switch over later

Re: WWMMD? - Internet bill

  • I didn't know that internet providers still set limits on usage! My answer to this question will depend. When you go over and get charged for it, how much is your bill? I'm sure this probably varies every month, but that would help me decide what to do. If it is costing you a lot every month, then the $350 cancelation fee would probably be worth it- if going over is costing you like $5 a month, then it would be better to wait for your contract to be over.

  • In canada they do still set limits and it is stupid expensive to go with one of the big 2 companies.  This past month we went over 7g and it was $28! Ouch.  To upgrade to the next level up (the 80g level) it is an additional $14. So half of the overage fee we just got dinged with.

  • So I just worked it all out on paper.  We could save $32.62/mth.  BUT it would cost us $535.62 upfront to do that. ($361.60 to cancel our contract and $174.02 to set up with the new provider).  we will just wait out our contract and set up with the new provider closer to the end of the current contract

Yeah- OUCH! Is all I have to say. I would do the same, wait out the contract (or upgrade until the end of your contract and then change. Internet is apparently expensive in Canada. I think the only place you hear about limits in the US is on cell phone data usage. Maybe when you get to the end of your contract next year, you may not be watching much TV then either, so you may want to switch and just go with internet with another company. That may help add to the savings too.
