PSA: GM Recalling SUVs Due to Fire Risk

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/06/17/gm-recalling-13652-suvs-for-fire-risk/

General Motors is recalling more than 193,652 SUVs from the 2006 and 2007 model years because a circuit board in the driver's door could short and cause a fire.

The vehicles involved are the Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Ruick Rainier, Saab 9-7x and Isuzu Ascender from the 2006 and 2007 model years. The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL are also included.

GM says owners should park the vehicles outside until they're repaired.

GM says the defect is caused when water gets into the driver's side door and corrodes a circuit board. If it shorts out, the power door and window switches may stop working. It could also cause overheating, which can lead to smoke or fire.

GM is notifying owners. Dealers will repair the vehicles for free.

    That sucks!

I received a letter similar from GM a few months ago stating that my Cobalt may or may not catch on fire. They didnt give any reasoning as to why it might happen but said that if I suddenly smell gasoline or my check engine light comes on, I should get to the nearest dealer. This car has been more problems than it is worth! I secretly hope it does catch on fire!!!!

  • Wow. It only took them 7 years to finally do a recall on this?

MIL and I both had 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix's that caught on fire. Hers was a total loss, and mine was thankfully put out before much damage happened.  When we contacted GM about the issues, they said we were out of warranty and it wasn't covered. Needless to say her insurance paid out on hers, then subrogated back to GM for payment.  I traded mine in that next week, with only 50k miles on it, for a Ford.  I will never own a GM again!

  • Our old REA owned a Ford truck with a similar issue. It did catch fire in his detached garage on Christmas Eve. The garage burnt down, and his two dogs died in the fire. Then, the fire spread to his home, which also burnt down and was a total loss. He made it out with his family, his boots, his cell phone and his wife's purse.

He lived in a more remote area and due to the road conditions (snow and ice) the fire teams could not get there in time.

We will never buy a GM or Ford.

I've seen more trouble with them over the years of my parents owning them than any foreign car.
