Another question about selling...

When we move, do we take these things with us?

-DH and I hung a wooden mantle on a brick wall in our family room.  There is no fireplace.  It is purely decorative.

-DH painted a mirror and hung it above the sink in the bathroom.  We have one just like it in the bedroom that I will take, but do I take the one in the bathroom too?  I plan to take the decorative shelves in there.  And if we take that one, what about the mirror in the downstairs bath?

-We had bought some bushes for the back of the house, but they are still in the pots.  I had read online to put your flowers in pots when selling so that you can take them with you when you leave.  Is it ok to take the bushes?

-We have attached a hose holder to our fence.  We had planned to take the hose.  Can we take the holder too?

Just thinking.  I have never done this before, obviously.  : )

Re: Another question about selling...

  • I believe the the "rules" are that if it is permanently attached to the house, that it stays. If that is the case, then the mantle and the mirrors should stay. The hose holder is debatable, but just keep in mind that it's just a hose holder.  The potted plants can be taken because they are not planted in the ground.

If you do decide to remove the mantle and the mirrors, be sure to notify the buyers and/or replace the mirror in the bathroom, and either replace the mantle or repair the spot on the wall where it was.

  • musictchr25 is correct. I'd call your real estate agent, or the buyer's, to let them know. When we looked at our house years ago, the sellers had a lovely room size rug in the living room. We asked if we could buy it and they sold it for $100 to us. These are always options in addition to leaving them for free.
  • I think it depends on where you live, and you should ask your agent, but I think generally at least the pots are safe to take with you. Sometimes the buyer may ask for things in their contract (like maybe they like your curtain rods or a piece of furniture).

I worked for a real estate company in CO and rememeber a few years ago that there was a big issue about some sellers taking everthing and the new buyers didn't see it until their inspection the day of the closing. If I remember they had taken down the towel and tp holders in the bathrooms, mantle for the fireplace, some of the faucets around the house and a few other things that I can't think of. It did not go over well.

But, when we bought our new house here in GA  we found something similar (not to that extent though, lol). I didn't even think of it since in CO it went without saying that if it's attached to the home, it stays. When we moved in there were no towel holders or tp holders, the nice shower head in the master bath was gone and the wooden blinds were all removed (they're odd shaped so were all custom built). Would have been nice if the sellers had left them since we payed all the closing costs and gave a full price offer so we could win a bidding war, but oh well.(they also promised to have the house cleaned professionally but failed on that part as well, so we may have just had icky sellers.) Our realtor said that it's pretty common for people to take their stuff like that. We also picked up on a few other differences between GA and CO regarding real estate but that was the most shocking (and upsetting, lol) one.

Good luck when you go to sell! It can be a tedious process, but it seems like in some places the market is picking up. Our company in CO has a lot of listings that are going on the market and are under contract within a week, so I hope you have similarly speedy results! Smile

?Laugh whenever you can. Keeps you from killing yourself when things are bad. That and vodka.?
  • If you have some items that are important to you to take along then you need to note that they are not included in the sale (after you verify this with your REA).

We had this happen with a mirror in one of our bathrooms. We just told buyers ahead of time that the mirror did not stay.

But in general anything nailed or screwed into the walls or floor interior or exterior stays put. That goes for the wall mounts for flat screen TVs too (at least in our area).

When we sold our home, our movers accidently took down a wall mounted bathroom shelf and packed it deep into the truck. We notified our buyers that this mistake occurred and we wrote them a check for $80 to cover the loss to them and so they could replace the shelf.
