UPMC & Highmark info

So where can I get accurate info about this stupid ordeal that is going on between UPMC and Highmark? I'm pretty ignorant about the "issues" - what is the reason they arne't getting along anymore?

I've heard that if you have Highmark and UPMC, you have until approx May 2014. And that you can still use Children's Hospital.  But that's all I know about the "effects" of this divorce.

I hate to see so many UPMC people lose jobs as they are claiming (heck my own Mom works at Mercy) but UPMC has come across as a bit of a bully ever since the "we are a non-profit" deal (snicker snicker - non-profit my butt [:^)] ) At the same time, why can't Highmark just cover UPMC when they are so prevalent in this town!?

Re: UPMC & Highmark info

  • They're both being stubborn, from what I can tell. Basically, though from what I know, UPMC got mad that Highmark was acquiring hospitals and therefore becoming stiff competition to them - so they decided to say that any Highmark subscriber would not be accepted (insurance wise) at one of their hospitals.

I worked for UPMC for 8 yrs and got out in 2008 because Corporate became very big-brotherish on the individual hospital campuses. I basically saw the writing on the wall that, in time, my campus was not going to have their own Mktg Dept (which basically came to fruition last year). I don't blame them, in a sense, because of brandng and consistency, but at the same time, a hospital in the North Hills is not going to have the market as one in the city or out in the boon docks. I think that while maintaining the brand, you can still tailor your marketing to the needs of the community it is in.

And the whole non-profit thing - yeah, I had a major issue with that one (as the one year they announced profits of over $600M). And the CEO's office is lined in Italian marble... but that's just me...

This is what I found regarding CHP:

The current contract expires Dec. 31, 2014. Without a contract renewal, Highmark subscribers no longer would have in-network access to UPMC hospitals or physicians other than for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC; Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic; UPMC Northwest in Seneca, Venango County; UPMC Bedford Memorial in Everett, Bedford County; and some specialty services, such as certain oncology services.

I think a lot of it has to do with Highmark getting into the hospital system business which puts them in direct competition with the UPMC facilities. So because their contract was up for negotiation UPMC doesn't want to renew it or some such foolishness.

  • Why can't UPMC stick to the hospital business and Highmark to the insurance side?  UPMC just wants to monopolize the entire local health care system and that is so entirely wrong.

Because it is a highly profitable business.

But Highmark is a non-profit so that shouldn't matter Wink

Highmark is an insurance company. I have never heard anyone say they were non profit. I thought it was UPMC that Claimed to be nonprofit??

    It is my Understanding that:

They are monopolizing and that is why Highmark decided to "Help" the "little guys" buy buying and backing the other Hospitals to keep the options open for people.

So even though Highmark didn't complain when UPMC started offering insurance of thier own, UPMC is up set that Highmark is teaming up with Hospitals that they now wont be running out of business or Buying.

I thought that it was UPMC saying" we don't want to accept Highmark at our facilities- So there we aren't resigning with you", possibly thinking that this would force more people to drop highmark and or choose UPMC insurance because the facilities are so wide- again with the monopoly (greed- for their non profit selfs) idea....
