QOTD 6/19

This topic came up on the radio this morning and I thought that it would be an good QOTD.

Radio host #1 said he went to dinner and the service was awful so he left an 86 cent tip, (he rounded the bill to the nearest dollar).  He said that tip should be earned and if the service is bad, the tip should reflect that.

Radio host #2 said that he should have given the waitress the customary percentage for a tip and complained to the manager.

Who would you side with?

  • Host #1. I tip completely based on service. Sometimes you can tell that they're having a bad day and they're still trying....as long as they're trying, they'll get a decent tip from me. I usually try and do 20% when I've got great service. If it's pretty good, but has some decent flaws (not refilling my drink for 10 minutes, only coming to the table to take our order, bring drinks, then food and check), they'll get 15%....if they're bad, it depends on how bad.

    Serving tables is something that they know going into they have to earn their money for. Tips are for telling them if they are or aren't doing their job. I'm not going to give my money that I worked hard for to someone who doesn't appreciate it, they just feel entitled to it.

  • I don't agree with either of them.  I wouldn't have only given an $0.86 tip, but I would have only given about 10%.  If it's bad service, I'll do 10%, 15% for decent and 20% for good to great.

    If it's really bad, I'll ask for a different server and talk to the manager.

  • I'm with Host #2 only because I'm a big softie. H will usually back me on this. H will also be the first to speak to a manager. A lot of times if something goes wrong during our meal, it isn't the servers fault. In those cases, we tip the server according to how well they did, not the other circumstances. We are both pretty generous tippers.

  • I'm a 20% tipper usually.  I'll give a little less if they are bad, but never less than 10%.  To warrant no tip the service would have to be horrendous.

  • i used to wait tables, and was pretty good on it, because of that i feel i am a fair tipper. I will tip 20%+ for excellent service, 18 for standard, 15 for ok, and 10 for terrible. If the food was late and cold, servers fault they forgot, if the food is late but hot, probably kitchens fault. If they recognize a mistake and fix it, all is well in my book. I have only not tipped twice, once resulted in a complaint with the BBB bc the management was so horrendous, and once resulted in a note on our receipt as to why we were not tipping.

  • Neither #1 or #2...

    I wouldn't tip 20%, but I wouldn't just round up to the $. DH and I usually tip 20%.If the service is bad, we'll tip less. We usually only go to restaurants that we know have good service (and good food), so 20% is our norm.

  • I would never give an 86 cent tip.  Without tips, waiters and waitresses make like $4 an hour.  The person could have been having a bad day or the poor service may have been something out of their control.

    I usually give 20%.  Service has to be pretty terrible to give less.  If service was as bad as the radio host described, I would probably have give 10% or 15% and spoken to management.  If management wasn't helpful, I would have gone to Yelp and written a bad review.

  • I'd agree with everyone above, I usually tip 20+% or good service.  10-15% for bad.

    But there was one time we tipped $0.  Our waitress was HORRENDOUS. It wasn't busy at all.  It's a bar/pub type place.  We were sat in the restaurant part that was kind of sectioned off from the bar.  We waited 10 mins for our drinks (water and soda), but while we were waiting, another couple we knew came in so we talked to them for a few minutes.  When we got our drinks we just started looking at the menu and asked for a few more minutes... 20 mins later (after waving her down from the bar... talking to the bartender) we ordered our food.  And our friends were leaving...  When we ordered I asked for more water... which I never got.  We had to ask another waitress for our check...  I was going to put a dollar or two down, but H took it and put a big 0.  I felt awful that night, but really... if you can't see your section, you shouldn't be at the bar.  It's usually a really nice chill place to eat.

  • I have never just rounded the check up for bad service.  I have definitely wanted to.  We always give about 20% and if the service is bad we give less.

    We even gave a waiter a tip when we had our entire bill comped because of being served raw chicken.

  • i am a waitress- i make $2.83 an hour< that's actually ABOVE what min wage for tipped employees in my area is i think it is $2.13 > and we have to claim our tips and they take the taxes out of the $2.83 so for a 2 week paycheck period my check is for maybe $20 for 70-80 hours! yes most of the $ i make is in tips so my hourly pay really doesn't count for anything! I am very good at my job ! usually when something goes wrong it is not my fault- the kitchen got backed up/ another server took the wrong food to their table and now i have to wait for the cooks to remake someone else's mistake! i am not saying i have never made a mistake but it sucks en my tip suffers when the kitchen/someone else makes a mistake! if its my fault or i am having a bad day i know what kinda tip to expect- so i dont complain!  but if i do nothing wrong and provide great service and still get a bad tip then i get upset! some people are just Cheap and dont think they should have to tip servers!

    DH also used to wait tables so needless to say we tip 20%+ for good service  and bad service gets no less than 15%  we are probably the most understanding people to wait on! things happen-
