Advice on applying for a new job

I have a job which I currently love, I get to work with animals (I've posted on here before) However, I find my manager very stressful and (honestly won't get in to all of that right now)

My job is accommodating in that when I go to school in the fall, I can work just weekends and focus on school during the week. But lately, I've been feeling stressed out and not so happy at my job.

I found an ad posted for a receptionist position at a veterinary office. I have experience. I would like to apply to this Veterinary office with an attitude of "I've got nothing to lose" because my job right now IS ok but if I could find something else that would also be accommodating with my schedule, that would be really awesome.

I'm just afraid of applying and having them call my work right now for a reference and my work saying WTF is going on here? We've had several people quit my current job recently.

How can I apply but be sure they're not just going to call my current job right away? I want to be honest with this new application of my hours of availability etc, but I can't exactly say "hey, don't let my current job know I'm looking for a new one" Because that seems sneaky or something.. What do you think?

PS. I realize with my schedule they may think I'm no way a fit for their job, but I figure I might as well give it a shot.

Re: Advice on applying for a new job

  • I would just say something about your application being confidential in your cover letter. At least that's what I've done in the past. In my field, references aren't called unless you're the last candidate or two.
  • Hey, thanks both of you. The "application" is basically send a resume and cover letter to their email or give them a call. I've never applied for other jobs while already having a job.. there's always been down time in between, so I didn't know how to do it. I guess in my cover letter I can just say that I want it to be kept confidential for the time being? It would just be awkward for them to call my current job while I'm there or if I don't get it then they'll know I've been looking around..
