S/O Maternity Clothes - questions for the plus size GPMs

First, I have a wedding to go at the end of July.  I'll be about 14 weeks.  I'm trying to decide if I'll be able to get away with wearing something I already have or if I'll have to buy a maternity dress/outfit (I don't mind having to do that!).  When did you get big enough to have to start wearing maternity stuff?

Second, is the demi panel on maternity shorts/pants/skirts comfortable?  I feel like it's just gonna go below my stomach and be on my underwear line and be uncomfortable.  Is that how they fit?  Are full panel more comfortable, even early on?

Re: S/O Maternity Clothes - questions for the plus size GPMs

  • I am 24 weeks today. I still wear some non-maternity clothes that are more flowy and loose fitting. I started wearing maternity pants and some tops at about 8 weeks only because by the end of the day, I was so uncomfortable with bloat, the maternity clothes helped tremendously with that.

If you are OK with buying a new dress, go ahead! Your body is going to be changing and I know with me, buying new clothes that I really feel good in helps with the changes.

I love love LOVE the full panels. Hate the demi panels. But everyone is different. I just feel like when I wear the demi panels I am constantly feeling like I have to pull my pants up. Lately I am in love with maxi dresses and skirts. Which is funny because I am normally so not a dress/skirt wearer. But with the weather getting really warm, they are so cool and comfortable!

  • I like the full panel. I think the semi panel might be better when you have a bigger belly. I have a few pants with the dem and it's kind of uncomfortable. Something flowy might work if you have it.

  • I loved the full panel.  I always felt uncomfortable in demi panel.  I also didn't start wearing maternity pants until 20 weeks or so.  I think something flowing would work well.

  • I never had anything full panel, so I don't know how comfortable they are, but I like to wear my pants on the lower side when not pregnant, so I really liked the demi panel ones.

All of the maternity dresses I bought I can still wear, except for one.  I was a size 16 before pregnancy and am now a 14.  Bought all of my maternity at Target and Old Navy.  Both online as the stores don't carry much.

  • I started wearing full panel pants at 8ish weeks. I had been gaining weight pre-BFP so my fitted dress pants were getting snug anyways, and the early pregnancy bloat was awful.I had a couple demi panel pants, but they rolled down on me more often than not.

I wore a lot of maxi and empire waist dresses (I wear them anyways because I am apple shaped). At 14 weeks, you'll likely still be able to fit into something non-maternity, it just depends on your comfort level of how something fits.

First time around I started wearing maternity clothes around 20 weeks, so unless the dress is fitted I think you should be able to get away with something you have.  FWIW, I was a BM in my brother's wedding at 17 weeks and was able to wear my normal size BM dress.  I'd try something with an empire waist that's more flowy on the bottom.  Also you can just play it by ear and get something closer to the date once you see how big you are.

As far as the demi vs full panel, I always found full panel to be more comfortable and never wore the demi panel ones.

  • FULL PANEL ALWAYS!

The demi ones roll below your belly (at least my belly). I started in mat. pants at like 9w, but I hated the belly band, if I didnt hate it I prob could have gotten away with longer.

    Old Navy has AWESOME stuff!
