Are you cutting back this year for Christmas?

We are.  I've set a strict budget and am sticking to it - for once.  I'm not cutting back on my baking, though, I like it too much!

Re: Are you cutting back this year for Christmas?

  • We are but more because we're closing on a house on Tuesday than anything else.  We really have so much stuff and normally buy what we want anyway so sometimes I feel like I'm buying stuff just to have something.  Our birthdays are also on Dec 30 and Jan 8 so we have that to get something for as well.
  • We set a strict budget stuck to it!  We just have to get a few more inexpensive things and then we are done.
  • we are buying very few presents this year... I am not working and with the twins.  Everyone understands though
  • We aren't really cutting back too much. We did set a budget and have stuck to it, but we did that in past years too.
  • I've cut back on my nephew and niece but am spending about the same I normally do for the rest of my family.  I'm also not buying gifts for all of the kids my friends have...that had gotten out of hand!

  • We're trying to do what we can to scale back a little and only buy for immediate family.

  • Yes. We bought a house in October, and some of our family/friends have been laid off and/or will be laid off in January.

To solve the problem we decided to do $10 unisex gift exchange (pile them all up and people pick one). Honestly, I'd say it's more fun and more of a group activity than doing normal presents. Plus it's something everyone can afford to do.

  • Not really. We cut back 2 years ago and are sticking to that.  We make cookies for the adults in the family, buy presents only for the kids and DH and I have a budget for what we get for each other.  It's worked out pretty well.

  • we've been gradually cutting back over the years. BIL/SIL and DH and I agreed we weren't exchanging between the couples but we are spending that money on our niece so it evens out. My sister and I went in together on gifts for our mom and grandmother which helps cut back too. DH and I don't buy each other xmas presents. If we want something, we just go buy it. Oh and I'm using a lot of "spend $20, get $10 off" coupons to make baskets of candles and bath goodies for my co-workers.

So to answer the actual question, yes we've been cutting back.

  • We're actually spending more this year, to help out my brother/SIL and DH's sister/future BIL.  We're very thankful for all our blessings and for the ability to them out.
