Does anyone take the bus in from the north hills?

UGH, my nightmare came true today...I've been parking at N. Hills Village for 3.5 years now and catching the bus into town.  In the past, they have just asked that we not park directly in front of Kohls (which, up until now, has seemed to be the only store that cares about it), so I've always been respectful of that & I park a good ways away.

This morning, the guy comes over & apologizes & said they've been asked to patrol the ENTIRE shopping plaza now and not let anyone stay there.  he let me stay today out of pity since I had already parked my car, but said that's it.  UGH.  I get it, I understand the shopping center not wanting a million cars clogging up their lot, my annoyance is more with the bus system in general.  If you have a bus that drives only on McKnight Rd (with no designated park & ride lots), where are people supposed to park??

Does anyone else take the bus in?  Where do you leave your car?

  • I don't ride the bus in - I can't let go of that control and up until next week, my son rides with me into Oakland. For me it is worth every single dollar to drive.

To help you with your issue - there is an official park and ride lot at the Rave Cinemas.  Or the one at the beginning of the HOV lanes.

    Check out this page:

    Hope that helps.

  • I don't know if the movie theater parking lot at the end of McKnight still used as a park and ride, but I used to park there years ago.  I know this would be back tracking for you and adding more time on to your commute, but that's the only parking option on McKnight that I can think of right now!
  • It looks like there's also a park and ride by North Park Pool - not sure if that services your bus line!
  • Thanks, ladies. I knew about the park & ride at the movie theater, though I think you now have to pay to use it & it's backtracking for me.  I'll check out the other park & ride on Perry, I didn't know there was one there.  I know I shouldn't whine about something that i'm lucky I was able to do for so long anyway, but still...ugh, one more reason for me to retire!!  Confused

  • Emmy, I started driving around the time the bus fees went up, and my parking lot went up.  I figured if I was spending $7 a day to get to work, I should just take my car and park while avoiding weird people. Though this morning I would have loved to just close my eyes for a half hour and been at work!
  • That is one of the reasons why I drive into town...as much as I hate to pay for parking, my drive to any nearby park n ride would be just as long as my commute into town!  I really wish Pittsburgh had better public transit options!

If I had to pay to ride the bus, I would definitely drive in!!  If you can get a spot at Pitt, it's $92/month, so paying $7/day to bus it in would not be worth it...BUT, I also ride the bus for free as an employee, so I hate the thought of forking over that money (plus gas) when I can ride for free. Sad

Oh right! I forgot about that. Well now I just find your situation less tragic than my zone 2/pay lot circumstance that forced me into driving. Wink  suck it up....hehehe

  • I park at the park and ride on Perry Highway. I have a LOT of issues with it, but it is what it is. You have to get there early and make up fake parking spaces in most cases (sometimes the police decide to ticket and ruin my life) and they're cutting trips starting last week but it's somewhere to park. There aren't creepers on that route, so that's something! I could rant for hours about Port Authority cutting routes without accomodating the people who now need to use the park and ride. They're making public transportation completely unuseable.

Sarah, what time do you get there?  I usually catch my bus (which is a different route, but I'm assuming they are about the same amt of time into downtown) at 6:55am.  is it about 15 minutes into town?

And yes, I could join you in your rant against Port Authority. It's all been downhill for me since they cut my bus into Oakland....this 2 bus thing is slowly killing my soul.

  • I don't get there until 8:15ish, so you'll probably get a space no problem. There's an upper lot and 2 lower lots, but it's still not enough. It gets to town in about 10 minutes. There's talk of knocking down the big salt tower thing and using that for parking, but I don't know if that's just a rumor or wishful thinking.
