Job decision

Ok so at my current job I work 32 hours a week and make substansional amount of money for a good coorporation..I dont like my job though. I work with people who are about 30 years older than me, I have a communte an hour each way a day and as I like what I do as in helping patients part I am board to tears most of the time.

I have had a new opportuinity come my way to work at a differeent place with the same amount of hours but about a $5 an hour pay cut. I would be working closer and the hours are a heck of alot better with holidays off and weekends. They did say also that you would get a 7% bonus at the end of the year depending on your review.

I am stuck.. Do i leave a place I dont love at all for a job I believe I would love and get paid less and save my sanity with traffic?

just looking for opinons I know My husband and I have the final say but just feel very confused Thanks in advance!

Re: Job decision

  • You will make the $5 pay cut back in gasoline cost savings (or be very close) due to the shorter commute. I am assuming you drive to and from work in a car and don't rely on public transportation.

Plus, the possible 7% bonus is a pretty big deal too. Holidays...weekends! Nice!

Remember that the grass isn't always greener. There will be something you dislike about this new job. But, it's closer, there's a bonus, you'd have a better schedule, hopefully you won't be bored.

  • I agree with the above post. Over the 40 years I've worked, there have been jobs I've loved which didn't pay enough, jobs I didn't love but paid well. I love what I do now and am in an industry where I can work from home. Perfect!

Sometimes making more money is worth it, but you have a lot of reasons to leave. "Work/Life balance" is a reason to leave. Many people list this as one of their least favorite aspects of their jobs. It sounds like you will attain this with your new job.

    Good luck.

  • I would take the new job. You'll make up the difference in gas, wear and tear on your car and you get better time off. At the old job, did you make extra money working on holidays/weekends? Also, what about health benefits, will those be any cheaper? Overall tho, if you aren't happy, I'd quit. A shorter commute also makes for a better/shorter work day.

I myself actually had a simliar situation, I left a 30 min hwy commute (bad traffic), expensive benefits, job that I hated. I took a new job with a $3000 salary paycut, but I now work 10 minutes from home. Since this is a large coporation, the benefit costs were cut in half or more (used to pay $50/week!). My paychecks were actually more than my last job because of this. I get gas only 2 X's per month and the miles don't rack up, so less oil changes/maitenance per year. I love it. And after 3 years, I'm finally up to the salary I was making at my old job. of course the pay raises are only 3% or so where as the last job was 4-6 percent, but the misery wasn't worth it. I am currently happy where I'm at now.

So just think about the overall benefits and you should be fine.
