Talk me down...

I know several of you probably can relate to where I'm coming from. Up until now, I've been very optimistic about this pregnancy. Especially after the betas and then the first couple of ultrasounds came back pretty much perfect. But for the past couple of days, I have been getting more and more anxious about this pregnancy. It's almost like, in my head, I think it's going too well, and I start questioning when the bomb is going to drop. Not if. When.

It doesn't help that last night, to ease my pgal brain, I decided to listen to the heartbeat. After ten minutes, I finally found it, but not before I'd worked myself up. Even after I found it, I was still quite upset.

I tried this morning, and sure enough, I found it right away, just like usual.

I don't know how to handle this anxiety. I was on anti-depressants before I got pregnant and slowly weened myself off them during the first couple of weeks. My MW told me that if I feel like I need to get back on them that she would prescribe me Zofran (I was on Prozac, which she doesn't recommend during pregnancy). I'm thinking that this may be a good idea...

Sorry this got so long. I just had to get that off my chest.

ETA: And of course, I mean Zoloft, not Zofran. LOL.

Re: Talk me down...

  • What you're feeling is totally normal. I still get anxiety because like you I feel like things are going too well, and I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's definitely a lot better now that I feel movement regularly, but sometimes there are times when I don't feel anything and I start to worry and I just have to remind myself that that is also normal.

If you feel like Zoloft might help, then definitely talk to your Dr. about it. Stress and anxiety aren't good for your pregnancy, and being able to alleviate some of that will make things so much better.

Like Madeline said, it does get better.

  • Even now, after every successful U/S, Dr. appt, and the beginnings of feeling movement I am still a bundle of nerves. And wonder "am I feeling him to soon?" Or "am I sure that was him?" Or my personal favorite "what is this weird pinch/cramp?". I honestly don't think these thoughts will ever go away until I have him in my arms but I manage the fears and am able to not dwell on them. If you are having a hard time managing and not dwelling, then I would talk to you MW about the Zoloft prescription.
  • Thank you, ladies. Another friend of mine also suggested deep breathing/meditation exercises, which I'm going to look into. If something like that doesn't help, then I will definitely talk to my MW about the Zoloft.

I think what you are feeling is really normal given everything you've been through. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop my entire last pregnancy up until he was born. If you think the zoloft would help and your MW is okay with it, it probably would be a good thing to think about. I always tried to remind myself I had no reason to think anything was wrong, and I used the doppler a lot, even after feeling movement.

I'm so glad everything is going well for you, and I hope the anxiety gets a little more manageable.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • hang in there, it's a totally normal feeling (or at least it is for a lot of us). i got that way leading up to every u/s plus a handful of other times. feeling him only made it worse because then i would worry when i didn't feel him for awhile.

also, that's why i never got a doppler. i wanted so badly to be able to hear the heartbeat any time i wanted but i also knew that it was always possible to have a day where i wouldn't be able to find it or that it could take awhile and i knew that that would make me even worse than i already was. i decided that the benefits did not outweigh the potential con's for me. i don't recommend dopplers for that reason.

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • CCH: Yeah, I think I'm going to step away from the doppler... or at least cut back on it a lot (like once a week instead of once a day). I was so stressed last night when I couldn't find it right away... then I was so upset, even after I found it! It wasn't good.

I know it's normal to feel this way. I'm trying to just stay positive and know that I am pregnant until proven otherwise... lol.

Thanks, ladies! I appreciate all of your support.

I dealt with post partum anxiety, and talking to a therapist made a huge difference for me. Have you considered that option?

     I'm sorry you're dealing with this.  {{{hugs}}}
