Feeling like a grown-up!

H and I made a big decision yesterday. We are donating my car (a '96 Nissan Maxima that needs about $1000 of work) so that we no longer have to pay insurance for it (I wasn't using it, anyway), and we're switching insurance companies. A friend was paying way less at another company and I heard they gave discounts to alumni from my university, so we got a quote and switched over immediately. Now, instead of paying $72/month for my car and $184/month for H's car, we're paying $0/month, and $80/month! That equals savings of $176/month!

  • Good job!

  • Sweet! It's awesome to have extra money when that type of thing happens. When we got married, we combined our insurances too and I couldn't believe how much my car insurance went down just because we were now on the same company/plan. And depending upon where you donated it to, you may be able to deduct it from your taxes.

If you do deduct it from your taxes, make sure all of your paperwork is in order.  I think deducting the value of a donated car was abused quite a bit in the past.  This might raise a flag for the IRS for an audit, which is fine as long as everything is correct.
