Home Inspectors - shop around?
Hi there,
We are having a home inspection done next week and were quoted $460 (it is a 2-family in Newton, MA). This person came recommended, but we don't necessarily feel a ton of loyalty and wasn't sure if we should shop around for another person who might be cheaper?
What do you think? I obviously don't want to skimp, but we are buying the property regardless (it is a family home, so we are buying it to keep it in the family) so this is more of an educational piece for us.
Thanks in advance!
Re: Home Inspectors - shop around?
Well you don't want the cheapest inspector. You will want one that you know is really good at his job. He is definitely worth the extra hundred bucks you might save if he does a good job. You are investing a lot of money into a house and you want to make sure you cover your bases. I would check out review sites and see what inspectors have the best reviews in your area and then price those out.
I used Angie's list to look at reviews of inspectors - I found an inspector that had a lot of reviews that were (almost all) positive but was still at a reasonable price.
You could also see if the inspector who has already given you a quote is listed on the Better Business Bureau web site, also look to see if he's on Angie's list and has reviews.
I would absolutely shop around and get a few quotes.

Pick an ASHI certified home inspector. Check out the BBB for ratings.
Ditto PPs, cheaper isn't better.
S/he should be there for several hours, take photos and write you a detailed report.
