Any new or unique toy ideas for outside toys for my 4 year old and 18 month old?
We have a few balls, some plastic gardening toys, hand-me-down powerwheels jeep, a lawnmower and some buckets. DH is also going to build a sandbox.
As a spinoff question, is there a difference in the safety of sand? I know playground sand is a bit cleaner, but there is a bunch of sand left over from when they did our fireplace and it seems like a shame to just throw it out.
Thoughts?
Re: Outside toys
We have 2 of the giant Tonka dumptrucks. (One of which DH picked out of someone's trash!). My boys play with them all of the time. They race them down the hill, one will sit in the dump part of it and the other pushes. They load it up with dirt, it's one of our most used outside toys.
We also have a few game type things - soccer goal/basket ball hoop (both kid sized) and we have baggo and the one with the two golfballs on a string that you have to loop around the stand. (I don't know what that one is called!)
jump rope, hulla hoop, balls, mini-golf balls/putters, frisbee, bubbles are all in our little outdoor toy pile.
I don't have an answer to your sand question.
Are the tonka dump trucks still made of metal? I remember playing with those as a kid and they were awesome! Great suggestion!
Dd's favorite outdoor stuff besides playset are her play houses. Both were gifts but I know my parents found the 1 at a garage sale for cheap. I love them! They are on our deck and when it's nice out she will play out there so well on her own when I'm making dinner. So nice for her to have some independent play. My parents also got her a little play grill for outside and some play food with it. Oh and some plastic real cups to go with it and crazy if she doesn't love those. She loves playing restaurant outside.
for smaller stuff we have tons of athletic stuff...soccer balls, softballs, glove, bat, T etc. kid pool and sprinkler thing.
DS got a Mud Kitchen, maybe when he was 3? He really enjoyed it- we didn't really use mud though- just sand.

other than that he is really content in the sand box and has several trucks or sand toys he uses in it.
As far as the sand goes- we have always bought playsand... I am thinking the sand from the fireplace might be kinda rough- maybe a thicker grind? Not that the beach isn't stoney, but it may clog things up more.
