We are in the market for a new washer/dryer set. Looking at a set from LG. We currently have an electric dryer, but we were thinking about getting a gas line run and get a gas dryer. The gas dryer is $200 more than the electric, not including the install of the gas line. Is it worth it in the long run as far as our electric bill goes to no longer have an electric dryer? Are we really going to save that much more a month after spending that much extra to get the gas dryer/have a line run?
I'm about 90% sure we are going to go with the electric but just wanted to get a few opinions before deciding for sure.
Re: Gas vs. Electric Dryer
I do like the gas dryer over the electric. But there are some things to look at. Gas dryers will heat up a room like crazy. So the potential savings on your bill might not be there, because you will then use electricity to cool down the room. During the winter time, they are a great source of heat. We did not see a noticeable difference in our monthly bills and I had gas heat and stove. When electricity was low, gas was high and vice versa. It just depended on the month. At all new all electric home, our monthly bill is what we paid for gas and electricity combined.
My husband is a handyman also, but for adding a gas line we would hire it out. You cannot see if there is a gas leak but will smell rotten eggs. I would feel safer to have a professional add a line.
