Totally Stinks...Rental Truck Stolen Full

So, has anyone faced this before or know of someone who has?

My sister and BIL just got back into town on the West Coast. Came in late last night around midnight and parked the rental Penske moving truck in front of their rental house. They locked it. BIL checked on it at 6am. Still there. Several hours later it was gone.

It was stolen. Still full of all of its contents (furniture, books, clothing, etc.) They got in so late that they didn't unpack it (were going to do that today).

They have filed a police report. The cop verified that it was not towed away by the city.

They have renter's insurance with USAA, which I'm fairly certain does cover their belongings in-transit. But my concern is the truck. It's one of those 16 foot moving trucks.

They have their auto insurance through Geico.

Does anyone have a clue how Penske might handle this with them? Like, is it conceivable that Penske would hold them liable for the loss of the vehicle?

CRAP! Ahhhh. The losses are great - antiques, wedding china, collector's items...whomever got this truck got a great deal.

Re: Totally Stinks...Rental Truck Stolen Full

  • Sorry - I don't have any experience with this but that really stinks! I can't imagine going through this! Hopefully their insurance (both renters and car) and Penske will help...
  • Penske will hold them liable for the truck as it was stolen while under their care. If they have Comprehensive coverage under their Auto Policy they will have to pay their deductible, but it should for the most part be covered then. But not the contents.

If they didn't have Comprehensive coverage through their Auto Policy, or if Geico doesn't cover moving trucks (not sure of what Geico's policies are) then they would have needed to purchase the insurance through Penske to cover the truck and again they may need to pay a deductible but then their covered after that point, again only for the truck, not the contents.

Sorry to hear about that experience. Not a good feeling when moving into a new neighborhood. Have them start checking out the local pawn shops and craigslist. And e-bay especially for the collector's items.

  • All I have to say is OMG! I'm so sorry!

Hopefully the police can track them down, although I know that is a long shot.

  • Here's an update...

Their renter's policy will indeed cover their items inside the truck. They have to write out all contents and give approximate values, then they have to rebuy the exact/similar items with the money the insurance company gives them and send the insurance company all the receipts of purchase as proof.

Sadly, with the antiques, because they have never been appraised, just passed down in the family, the insurance company won't pay out the true value of them So the antique bookshelf that would probably be valued at $3k they can only get a basic replacement bookshelf for. It's fair. I understand. Just sayin' if anyone has important furniture in your home, you may want to have it appraised.

I looked at Penske's website and apparently they do provide an insurance coverage for theft of the vehicle. Of course, this is an additional cost. I do not know at this point if SIS and BIL had this. I think they did.

This is a horrible, horrible week. SIS is sick and our grandma just passed away and now they've lost their personal, sentimental items.

  • That is very sad.  They should periodically check Craigslist and Ebay for those "special" items, they may be able to track down the thieves that way.
