Recommend carry on luggage

Traveling with my husband and three girls at the end of the month. We will leave out of Boston and connect in Miami, then to our vacation destination in Punta Cana. Since we have a tight connection, I'm determined to not check in any luggage to avoid any mishaps.

I've been researching for the last few days and reading reviews. I don't want to risk buying a carry on that would be considered too big for the plane overhead. What carry on do you have and can recommend?

  • I have the Samsonite LIFT 21", and absolutely love it.  It fits everything I need for a week vacation. I believe it's considered one of the biggest carry-on's without needing to check it. The only downfall is if I'm on a full flight, then sometimes they have to put it underneath. I have no problem with that, because it beats paying $25 each way for checking a bag.

Although I agree with NestCayla. If you are planning on fitting 5 people's items into a few carry-on's then that could be difficult.  I personally would check 1 bag with most of the clothes in it, then have each of the girls do a backpack with a change of clothes, swimming suit, and their entertainment for the flight. You and your H do 1 wheeled carry-on, and one larger duffle bag or backpack. This way you have hands available for the girls, but aren't checking 5 suitcases.

We had a little over an hour for our flight connection in Miami from Punta Cana, and our luggage kept up with us. If it doesn't, the airport will deliver it to your resort once it comes in on the next flight.  It honestly isn't that inconvenient if you have a suit in your carry-on.

  • Thanks for the responses. My idea was for DH, my oldest daughter (11), and myself to each have a carry on. In addition, I plan on taking a Lands End bag as my personal item. And my daughter would have a bag similar to this but a bit smaller.

Our layover in Miami is exactly one hour....and that's if our flight from Boston leaves on time with no flexibility to be late. My biggest concern, however, is our layover when we return. Although we have a 2 1/2 hour layover in Miami, I've heard of ridiculously long lines in customs causing people to miss their connecting flights. And these are people with greater layover times than what we have. Obviously having to retrieve and recheck bags only adds more time and could be the difference between missing/making your flight.

We are traveling on American Airlines and I have read their carry on limits. According to their website, carry ons cannot be greater than 22X14X9.

  • Samsonite makes a great product.

I've had my set of carry-ons since 2006. No rips, tears, all the zippers are amazingly intact, the handles still work and my bags have the 360 degree wheels, which are great since they're multi-directional and make weaving through crowds and tight spaces so easy.

These bags have gone abroad a few times and have probably been on 30+ flights. Great product!

  • I traveled with this almost every week for work for over a year.  It also went with me on the Incan Trail and to Kalalau Valley on Kauai.  It's a really fantastic backpack.
