Out with Old, In With the New?
I recently was offered a job with a government agency. I was jubilant since I have been working retail for close to ten years and I would finally be able to quit, in my eyes, my "dead-end" job. I was finally contacted by this agency to put in my "two weeks" at my current job and get ready for a paid training course that would last several weeks. So I did so, and left the store with great fanfare and support. It has been close to a week from my final day at the store and there has been no word from the government agency. I have called and spoke with the people who I feel are in charge of my position but they have no definite date as to when I'll start this "training course". They just tell me they think it will be soon.... maybe. In the meantime, I am panicking. I have NEVER been without a job and have read stories online of people waiting months to be officially hired for this position, yet these posts are years old. What I want advice on is this; I am in the process of planning a wedding to my fiance that I live with, and it is very scary to think I could be waiting on this "dream job" for weeks or months. When should I start looking for employment elsewhere and give up on this opportunity? I have looked at my finances and if I don't spend a dime, I will be able to sustain not having a job for three months without asking my fiance or family for anything. Should I just sit back and enjoy the time off? Or should I get up and find a "temporary" place to get some income? Am I jumping the gun? Please advise!
Re: Out with Old, In With the New?
Wow! That really sucks that they would tell you to quit, and then not give you a start date. I would honestly get looking for something temporary, even if it is retail again (and probably paying a lot less than you were making at the job you had for the past 10 years)
My dad works for the state of Minnesota part time. He is retired, and works hours that work for him and my mom. This job took him 3 months to get hired because of red tape and a change in management and HR that happened right in the middle of the hiring process. I would not continue to wait on them, that would scare the crap out of me. Maybe it's just taking so long partially because of the holiday, but honestly if they can't give you a start date by Monday, I'd be filling out applications.
If you left your previous job on good terms, would they take you back while you wait to hear on the new job? Or has your position been filled already?
I think you should certainly talk this over with your fiance. You are getting married soon, and you should be getting ready to make these sorts of decisions together. I think he should be picking up all the household bills if you are out of work, rather than put you in a position where you "have to ask him for money." But that's really between the two of you, and well, that's part of making this kind of decision together. If you haven't discussed it already, it could make a good jumping off point for a larger discussion of how to handle your money as a married couple.
If they haven't given you a start date, are you sure the new position is a sure thing? I don't think I've ever received a job offer that didn't come with a start date, so this seems really fishy to me.
