now I have a curtain question (edited pics)

Currently, our dining room window has a gold-ish colored swag on it that came with the house...I never loved it, but didn't hate it enough to change it.  A few weeks ago, I found some curtains clearanced at target that I thought would look nice and put them up last night.  But, now I'm not sure that they look right.  Here are the pictures...what is off about them?  the length?  too fluffy?  They just look strange.  They are straight out of the package, so don't mind the creases. (If I keep these, I'll buy a new rod to go with them, because I don't love that either)

Thoughts?

with natural light, though it's a bit hard to see:

Re: now I have a curtain question (edited pics)

  • So I can't see your pictures- and tried on my phone but didn't have luck there either. But in anycase... I will provide blind advice if you will...

I like curtains to hang high and wide. It helps make the window appear bigger, rather than just covering up part of the window. Also, I prefer them to be long- so floor length or longer for a more casual feel. So those green ones I ordered will actually hang about a foot past either side of the pair of sliding glass doors they are framing. (making my curtain rod span something ridiculous like 16 feet) and the length I ordered was the 96 inch long ones. so I can hang them about halfway between the ceiling and door, and still have length to puddle a bit on the floor.

  • yea, they load on my phone now!  (work blocks all kinds of image hosting sites so I miss out on a lot of pictures in general) Anyway- they are cute! but I see what you mean.  I think they seem poofy because you have them pushed far enough to the sides to show the window- and that causes the top to be puckered in but the bottom bellows out cause it does what it wants. Using curtain ring clips could give you an extra inch on the length- and allow the top to not bunch up so much. But I would still hang curtains wider on that window. Perhaps a touch higher too, but not too much because of your moldings (and I wouldn't go any higher with those particular sheers)
  • They are too short and not full enough.

I am like Amanda. I like the rods higher and my cutains to puddle. In our current house, it has been a challenge to find the length at a reasonable price and have fallen in love with Ikea for their curtains and the super reasonable price.

  • I agree with the others - I think the the curtains should be longer (hitting the floor) and the rods hung a bit higher.
  • Thanks, ladies...I knew something was off!  The rod would look better if it was higher...all the more reason to repaint the room and move the rod! :)  repainting was on our list of winter projects, but it never got done. Sad mainly because of my inability to commit to a paint color.

Welcome to my world. We are almost done with the bathroom and I am now second guessing my color choice and it matching the vanity.

I'm agreeing with everybody on this.

  • we just had an interior designer come to our house --it was only $85 for the hour and she went around and told us where to hang all the stuff we brought from our old house and what kind of curtains to get for each window and how to hang them.  This is only one person's opinion but she told us that "puddling" drapes was outdated and that curtains should hang a hair above the floor.  She also advised to use opaque curtains, no sheers, and to hang them per the diagram posted above only on the sides of the windows but not covering the windows.  Finally, she suggested hanging a mirror on the wall opposite the window to reflect the light back into the room.
  • I agree with PPs, they look best when you hang them as high as possible to the ceiling w/out making them look like floods. I personally like a little puddling, but I'm not an interior designer! Like Kris, I'm a total Ikea curtain snob. I'm sure other places have long curtains for a reasonable price, but Ikea curtains are reliably good in my opinion. Grommets aren't everyone's bag, but they (or as Amanda mentioned, curtain clips) do hang nicer (in my opinion) and result in a flatter, less poofy pleating. And I do also extend the rods past where the sides of the window ends because they cover less of the window when they're open. Again, per Amanda's diagram.
  • Just to clarify, I don't mean yards of extra fabric on the ground kind of puddles (they just collect dust and dirt) I mean a couple inches of extra. But like Mandy, I am far from an interior designer.

The nice thing about Ikea is that they include hemming tape that just requires an iron, although I have never used it.
