Holiday Vacation Recs - in US early December

Looking for recommendations for stateside vacations in early December for our 5th anniversary. We went to Disney World last year, Cancun the year before that. We're in north Alabama so we go to Gatlinburg, Nashville and the beach regularly.

I'm really just looking for recommendations or experiences, places to go or not.  We love Christmas, so bonus points if the location is decorated for Christmas or has some holiday events.  We're willing to fly, but don't want to spend more than $1500-$2000, no more than 6 nights. Just hubby and I.

Places we're considering are Savannah, GA; Charleston; New York City; Boston

TIA!

Re: Holiday Vacation Recs - in US early December

  • We are headed to Charleston soon and are super excited about it!!  My family has traveled there before and says great things.  We are staying in a family member's home for free so I can't comment on that but we're checking out Groupon for deals on activities in the area.  Good luck with your planning!
  • There are always great things going on in Savannah in December.  The city is decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving.  You can visit many of the old homes and museums that will be decorated  as they were in the 1800's.  There are parades, concerts, shows and more.  The weather is usually fairly mild, but I can't make any promises.  I'd highly recommend it, though.

  • Thanks for the input!  I might be leaning towards Savannah if I can convince DH that he'd enjoy it!

  • Are there things in particular that he enjoys?  I could give you suggestions to talk to him about.

  • He's a big history buff, so he likes museums and historical site seeing, things like that.  He's not much of a shopper (like most men).  He LOVES Christmas though, so lots of holiday stuff is a good sell for him.  He went when we was fairly young, 8 or 9, and said it was boring.  But I think everywhere is boring when you're 8 or 9. Hah! Any recs would be wonderful!  He's leaning towards NYC which would be cool as well, but a lot more expensive since we could drive to Savannah.

  • I was going to recommend Charleston before I started reading the responses.

I went there for business in February a few years ago, and my then fiance (now husband) tagged along. It is a beautiful city with a lot of history, which we both like. They have things for the Civil War AND the Revolutionary War. Buildings, museums, etc.

We stayed at the French Quarter Inn, which is a 4 Diamond hotel. I think it is probably the nicest place we've ever stayed. Rooms have fireplaces, some have a balcony or patio. They greet you with a glass of champagne upon arrival, have fabulous free breakfasts in the lobby, cookies & milk at lunch time, and a wine bar in the evenings. This was the company paid-for hotel, it's not cheap, but for a 5th anniversary I'd say go for it! I'm sure it's magical during the holidays. Every restaurant we tried in Charleston was like a 5 star restaurant, lots of great food.

Check out www.tripadvisor.com for the cities you are interested in. There are recommendations by customers for hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

    Congrats and enjoy your anniversary!

  • Thanks for the responses!  I'll definitely do some research and see what I can come up with.

  • We went to Captiva Island, FL in late November for Thanksgiving 2 years ago and it was wonderful.  The resort we stayed at (South Seas) and the other island hotels come up with a whole holiday schedule of events starting with Thanksgiving through New Years.  It was very festive!  We just got back last night from our 3rd visit to the island/resort and had another wonderful time!  The island and resort are just fabulous:
