We have started looking into pediatricians in our area and I am pretty torn at what to do.
We are not originally from this area so we don't have too many suggestions to go off of, but Martin's coworker gave us the name of a pediatrician she has been taking her children to for years. The problem is, the office is about 25 minutes away from us in Collegeville.
Coworker has made several suggestions for us in the past and we have always been very happy with our experiences.
Do you think this is too far?
I remember having some medical emergencies with my sick kitty and having to drive that distance with her and I was a nervous wreck, I can only imagine how that would be amplified with a child.
TIA
Re: How far away is your pediatrician?
Ours is 10-15 minutes away. As long as you don't mind 25 minutes for regular scheduled and sick visits, I don't think it's unreasonable. If something was such an emergency you were worried about going 25 minutes, you'd be heading to the ER, not the Peds office.
That said, I'm sure there are closer peds that are also great.
Are you going back to work and using childcare? If so, Id try to find a pedi that is fairly close to both your home and your childcare location. Its a lot of driving to go from work to daycare to the pedi and back again for each appointment. Of course if your kid is sick they will likely be at home, but there are many times where appts are needed for ear aches, allergies, rashes etc and LO is still going to daycare that day.
I think a quality pediatrician that agrees with your personal philosophy on your child's medical care is worth 25 minutes....is that 25 minutes in traffic? Because 25 minutes can easily become 45 minutes in traffic and thats probably gonna be miserable with a sick kid in tow.
There are a lot of appointments early on (just for well-visits) - generally, three days, two weeks, one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, etc. If you're baby is slow to gain weight and doesn't regain birth weight by the two week appt, you might have to go in for weekly weight checks. Also, when my baby was super young, going even 10-15 minutes away from home was quite a task. Even now at three months, a 25 minute drive by myself makes me nervous. Based on that, I would advise a closer pediatrician.
I know you're not too far from me. If you're looking for other recommendations, we see Dr Corcoran at CHOP Flourtown. It's about 15 to 20 minutes to get there. There has never been emergency situations where I was worried about the time it would take to get there. In those situations we web to the emergency room. I never had any problems with the office or the trip and I love that all of his medical history is on file with CHOP because if he ever needed to be admitted somewhere that's where I would take him. When he was admitted earlier this year for dehydration from the stomach virus we were able to go to Abington because they have a CHOP floor.
Dr Corcoran is seriously the nicest, sweetest woman ever. Tommy loves her and she is so positive and just radiates love for the kids. She alway makes me feel like Tommy is her top priority. Dr Tomaine is also awesome at that practice.
Ours is about 5-10 minutes away. We have only needed to go for well checks, but I love that they are so close.
I am sure her recommendation is great, but as someone else said - I am sure there is someone just as good that is closer

If you would like a rec for someone closer, we take the monster to Pediatric Associates of Plymouth on Walton Road. I'm not totally sure where you are, but it takes us roughly 10 minutes to get there.
I'm not a huge fan of Dr Salomon, but otherwise, we have had great luck with all of the other doctors.
Ours is pretty much around the corner. I love her so much. Not sure what we're going to do when we find a house since we're not looking in our area. But I may travel to her since I love her that much. It all depends on your relationship with the doctor too I think.
And remember, you CAN switch. We started with a larger office and didn't much care for it. We switched for his 9 month check up and have been blissfully happy ever since
