Thinking of booking flight on Southwest Air.

If you have traveled with them, please share your experience.  The no assigned seating is new to me and because I am traveling with a person of size, we'd need to get the extra seat.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: Thinking of booking flight on Southwest Air.

  • I've flown Southwest twice the last time being early May. I think it kinda stinks, but I usually pick the cheapest airline which happened to be this one. There are no TV's (think Jetblue-my fav!) and there is no radio in the armrest, so make sure you have entertainment. In regards to the seating, you need to make sure you "check-in" exactly 24 hours before your flight, the longer you wait, the further you will be in the back. We booked at exactly 24 hours and got put at the end of section B and ended up in the middle of the plane which wasn't bad.

For your traveling companion, you may need to book 3 seats if thats the case, but as long as you check-in close to the 24 hours before, you should find plenty of rows open to sit (though you may be towards the back because everyone likes the front)

    Good luck!

  • Yeah, we don't love flying them. PP is right, the seating is a hot mess. Their prices sometimes are ridiculously good, so it can be intriguing. Unless I'm really saving A LOT per ticket, I typically won't deal with them - sometime's things are just not worth the frustration.

I fly SW a lot. The exit seats are roomier for foot room but are the same size seats. There is priority boarding for business select and rewards members with enough flight status. After that boarding priority is based on when you checkin for the flight. You can pay to do an early bird checkin which makes you the next group before general public. check it out on their website. http://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/faqs.html?topic=earlybird_checkin. I have never used it because I have the flight status.

Checkin otherwise is 24hr brfore the flight. I use a phone app to checkin as soon as possible to get a better boarding position. Good luck.

  • i may have taken your post wrong but the way i'm reading it is that you wouldn't book an extra empty seat for your large companion but just rely on getting an extra seat when you check in? if you need an extra seat book and pay for it. please :)

  • I didn't used to like Southwest.  Now I would rather fly them than anyone else.  Who cares if you are the last on the plane?  They are friendly and accommodating.  Come on!  No TV?  I think as an adult you can entertain yourself for a few hours--even if it is catching up on some zzzzzz's.

  • I like Southwest because it's easy and friendly.  Unless I am traveling for 4+ hours, I don't mind them one bit.
  • I love Southwest, and would choose to fly them most of them time even if it cost a little more. The fact that they are usually cheaper is a bonus. They are friendly, fun, and you get 2 bags for free!

Side note: all the people in their commercials are actual employees. We had such a great flight attendant once that I wrote them and told them he should be in a commercial.

Anyway, as others said, check in online exactly 24 hours before your flight. You are then assigned your spot to board. If you are in "A" group or early "B" group, you shouldn't have any trouble sitting together. When it is time to board, they have signs that you use to line up in order. It's actually so much easier than the push and shove that I have experienced when they call you up by "A" group or sections on other airlines.

When people are the most unlovable is usually when they need it the most.

  • Alithebride, I have no problem buying extra seat(s).  I am just very intrigued by the no seat assignment part.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies.  I will try it out over the summer and report back.

  • We flew SW for the first time last month. It was fine. Like you, my husband couldn't grasp the no assigned seats concept- but we were able to get a seat together no problems. I would def. fly them again. Just make sure you check in as early as possible.

We flew Southwest for the 1st time in April.  It was alright.  It was the cheapest flight to where we were going

My only advice is that if you can't commit to getting on line at the appointed time or you don't want to pay the extra money to get the guarenteed priority boarding, don't do it.  We always ended up in the B group (once we got the back of the As)  We ended up with seats in the front b/c I don't mind the middle seat.  The 1st boarders got on & many people staked out the aisle leaving the middle & window seat open.  We just politely asked if we could sit there & climbed in.  That won't work for you & your friend but it might be a strategy to get the larger person the window seat leaving the middle open & undesirable but again, this won't work on a sold out flight where they booked every seat.

  • If you are concerned, pay to check in early so you can board first.

We just got back from traveling with a lap child and boarded with family boarding, after group A.. no issues on either flight getting a seat.  In fact, we were in rows 6 and 7, on each flight.
