We rent the upstairs of a house. Behind the house is a huge garage that our landlord rents out separately. There were some real weird people in there until this month, when they were evicted and had to move all their stuff out. We would like to rent it since we have a lot of stuff we need to store (ATVs, lawn mower, a project truck we are working on) and also do not want to have more weird people coming and going at random hours. The issue is that the landlord wants $300/mo to rent the building! We decided to ask ILs if they would go in on it with us, since they do not have a garage either and need to store their motorcycles in the winter. The problem is, as I have mentioned on here before, my ILs ae horrible with money. I could totally foresee them magically not having the money, or paying us late, or asking us to spot them their half until they could pay us. DH and I have talked about talked about this but cannot come up with a conclusion. We cannot afford to pay the whole 300 so we def would need to share it, but I just do not trust his parents.
So, in short, the pros are: a place for our stuff, no random people on the property, and a place to work on our project truck. The cons: ILs are not good with money, it's money that we could be saving, ILs showing up randomly or helping themselves to our apartment as well, and there are some utilities that would need to be paid as well.
We need to decide soon so our LL can rent it to someone regardless, so any suggestions would be great.
Re: Renting garage
Don't rent it with your ILs. Where are you storing the items now? I would look for someplace cheaper that still meets your needs. Or rent a house with a garage?
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.

Try a storage unit. They can be quite inexpensive and climate controlled too.
DItto PPs; avoid the ILs.
All our stuff is currently sitting outside, which has had a major negative affect on all of it. We have piles of stuff (DHs tools, storage item) piled up inside our place, making for a lot of clutter. The building is large enough to fit about 4 cars, so it's not like a little single car type thing.
It's so attractive because its on our property but my ILs can be such idiots. I will talk to DH more about it.
Who cares how big it is if your ILs may not cough up cash when it's due!?!
You said yourself you can't afford this $300 without them and that they are "idiots" with money.
1. Sell your junk laying out in the yard or donate it. I am shocked your ll allows this.
2. Or rent a larger place
3. Or rent a storage shed.
