Talk to me about Car Seats and Strollers

I'm home from work today and I've spent the better part of the morning looking (and registering) at Babies R Us's website. H and I originally discussed going with a convertible car seat (My reasoning was why buy 2 car seats in a year if we could avoid it. H's reasoning is that they look safer to him.)

I can't seem to find an infant stroller that doesn't require an infant car seat, which is adding to my frustration.

The more I read and look at them I'm not so sure it's the way to go. Has anyone done this or do you have any thoughts? I'm so happy I have about 6 more months to figure this stuff out...

I would do an infant car seat. It is so nice to be able to strap B in and carry him, whether he is awake or sleeping. When we go out, he has stayed in his car seat, so H and I don't have to hold him, he can sleep and other people can't touch him.

Yesterday, we went out to dinner at a restaurant outside. We kept him in his car seat in his stroller. It was so nice to have him safe, covered and out of the way. I had thought like you that going straight to convertible, but I think infant seats are really easy and I think they are safer for infants, though I'm not positive.

Convertible car seats are not designed to easily be taken out of the car like an infant car seat is and that is why you will not find a stroller to attach one to.  They don't have bases and are strapped directly into the car.

Also most strollers that don't have a car seat attachment aren't meant to be used until LO can sit up on their own well (typically I think most say around 6 mo), so pretty much if you want to use a stroller in the beginning, attaching an infant car seat to one is the easiest way to go unless you find one that fully reclines.

Also even though most convertible car seats can start being used when LO is 5 lbs, they are just so huge for newborns/infants and I personally don't think as safe seeming.  Like MRads already mentioned, the infant car seat allows you to take the baby out of the car and have them remain sleeping/covered/untouched which is a lifesaver in those early months when you are trying to get stuff done, go out to eat, etc.  DD would wake immediately if we tried taking her out even if it was just to put her in a carrier or transfer her to her crib, etc...When they're sleeping peacefully, believe me the last thing you want to do is disturb them.

  • 1)  I personally think it's nice to be able to grab the infant seat when baby is sleeping.  But that's just my opinion.

    2)  I know there are strollers that either recline fully, which allow for infants, or that have bassinet attachments (which I thought would have been awesome since I had a tummy sleeper).  I believe the Uppababy Vista has a bassinet option.  The City Mini (which I love) reclines fully, but I still think it would have been WAY too big for Lucy when she was new.  I would go to amazon and search for stroller bassinet attachments and see what brands come up.

The travel system we registered for reclines all the way so that you can lay a newborn in. You can adjust a couple velcro pieces to make it look like a bassinet. We have the Graco Modes Click Connect.

We got the Graco Modes Click Connect as well. Seems to be perfect for new baby with the infant car seat and without.

If you are looking for a stroller that you can use with an infant without an infant car seat, I believe you can buy the Graco Modes Click Connect as just the stroller. I think it would work nicely if you didn't want to go the infant car seat route.

We however went the travel system route, only because I personally feel it will be better to be able to leave baby in car seat when we are out and about. Especially if they are sleeping.

  • We got both the infant and the convertible car seat. The infant one they usually use at first, the convertible one they use second.

As the pp mentioned, the infant car seat comes in and out of the car. The convertible car seat stays in the car and you take the kid in and out of it.

We plan to put the infant one in my car and the convertible in dh's car to start.

You can get a strollerthat is safe to use for an infant, just read what they are rated for. If you did this with the convertible car seat though, you would have to unbuckle the infant in the car and carry the infant to the stroller. Which you could do.

Infant car seats are not super expensive, I am pretty frugal and thought it was worth it.

    This.

We went with the Chicco Liteway Plus.  It's nice to just pop the car seat in there when I'm out and about, but if we are just going for a walk, we recline it and lay G down in it since he hates the car seat most of the time.  Plus, this stroller is pretty lightweight and small.  I like it a lot, but there's not a lot of storage space, and there's no tray.

  • when that baby is brand new, and up until it is about 3-4 months, all it is going to do is sleep as soon as it gets in a car. which means it will most likely sleep through the car seat being taken out of the car, put in to a stroller and taken through a store. if it were me, i wouldn't want to wake that baby up and have to take care of errands with an awake newborn. no thank you. and if you go straight to a convertible seat that is exactly what you are going to have to do. of course you're not finding strollers for convertible seats-that's not what they're for. convertible seats don't leave the car, unless you aren't using it at all and want to take it out (like my parents, for instance, only put it in when they are going to pick up my niece). you'll hear mom's talk about being stuck in the car with their napping babies because they have put them in to a convertible seat. we're already in that stage because we no longer take the infant seat out of the car (he would wake anyways) so if he has fallen asleep i have to decide whether or not to let him remain napping.

also, the infant seat is supposed to be safer for a newborn. what the reason is, i don't know.

some of the strollers do have bassinet attachments that you can buy. i'm pretty sure city mini has one. so it would work for when the baby is tiny and will go back to sleep easily.

we have the city mini with the car seat attachment for our graco snugride. we didn't put LO in the front part of the stroller until he was 6 months old. i guess we could have done it sooner but i was sad to part with the car seat attachment and had a hard time letting go of it because it was so convenient. when he was 0-3/4 months old we had a car seat cover over top of the car seat. i would snap him in to the stroller and zip around and people stayed away from him. i sometimes put the flap down so that they couldn't even see him and it kept him in darkness so he slept better. now i have an alert baby when i go out, so life is different.

I strongly recommend an infant seat. DS fell asleep in the car often and it was nice to just take the seat in his house and put it in his room if he was sleeping. It was also handy to just clip into his stroller.

  • Definitely get an infant seat. DD is 6 months and still falls asleep whenever she is in he car or stroller. I never have to worry about waking her to move her in and out of the car.
