1st Anniversary Celebration - where to go?

I could use some help planning our first anniversary (Mid-August) in the Western NY region.   Our initial idea is to explore wine country, (tastings, dinner, tours, etc) but we're having trouble planning a cost-friendly itinerary.

We were exploring Niagara-on-the-lake, but the cost is fairly steep for the weekend (being closeby, we even discussed just going up for the day to cut out the lodging costs).  I also started checking out the finger-lakes region, but I don't know enough about whats out there to really plan a trip.

Any ideas/itineraries/things to see and do at either place?  Is there somewhere we're missing?

Thanks!

Re: 1st Anniversary Celebration - where to go?

  • these are my personal thoughts having been to both: the wineries in NOTL have FAR FAR FAR better wine than the finger lake region could ever hope to have. there's not all that much there really and i found the area to be disappointing as far as restaurants etc.. go. both of those areas will be pricey that time of year. why not wait a month or 2 until the price drops? i mean if you can't afford it then why bother going? you might want to consider staying in toronto and then going to niaraga on the lake for a day.

  • I too, think that i'd enjoy the NOTL wines better... but i've never been through the finger lakes wineries, so there's that "explore a new place" draw.

We're not really into waiting for the trip.  We delayed our honeymoon a bit last year (I work in education so aug/sept is busy!).  We can definitely afford the trip, but I suppose it's just looking at the numbers and thinking "we can buy new windows for that price". silly 'responsible' conscience =)

We are close enough that we could do NOTL in a day trip, and if lodging is whats holding us up then we'll probably do that.  I'm still curious what "good spots" there are at both places.  I know what I enjoyed in NOTL, but I'm sure I missed something awesome the first time around...and never being to the finger lakes region, I'd love some recommendations there, too =)

i'm sorry. i can't recommend one thing in the finger lakes area-like i said it was disappointing. i mean i haven't been through the whole entire ara and stopped at evertything but the wineries where we went had mostly white/sweeter wine (i'm a dry red girl so for me 2 thumbs down). restaurants? nothing impressive. i cannot remember the name of the town where we stayed and it was one of the larger more well known ones. it was a total disappointment. I found it to be kind of run down as far as the towns go-a lot of empty closed places and the ones that were open tried to be like napa and charged FAR more than they should have. i'm' ok with paying a lot for food/drinks but not when it's mediocre you know?

i've done NOTL only as day trip and wine tasting so i can't say past that but the  wineries were great and so were any place we stopped for food/drinks. totally delicious.

maybe someone else can give you better recommendations for the finger lakes-sorry to be such a downer about it.
