Flexible work week decision

Would you take the chance and go to 32 hours or remain full time?

I deleted the details as previously warned.  Thanks for the replies!

Re: Flexible work week decision

  • Take another look at your budget and include EVERYTHING.  (IMO property taxes, auto insurance would/should be included in the "all" expenses covered by your DH.

Then sit down and see how much guaranteed income you need to have to cover everything with some for extras.

What I see as preferred option would be to look for a different PT job that does not require a long commute and has fewer hours. (less spent on gas as well as less time commuting)

Cut back on your lifestyle and reduce expenses if having more hours at home is a priority.

  • Is working four 9 or or 10 hour days an option? With doing four 9 hour days you would still be cutting your hours & pay, but not by as much.Of four 10 hour days. Rough being gone that long but you might have a better commute as you would miss rush hour traffic. You would be saving on commuting costs then only going in 4 days a week.

If they go for this, consider scheduling your day off for during the week and not necessarily on Monday or Friday. This way you can easily schedule any doctor's appointments, baby appointments etc. for that day of the week.

    Thanks for the replies!

I've been looking for a different job closer to home for 8 years now.  There are very few opportunities in my field where I live.  Trust me, I would love to work closer to home.

My proposal was actually for working four 9 hour days.  This was rejected.  I truly think these two plans are my only options.

  • If you feel like you can swing it, I would stay part time working there. Keep an eye out for opportunities closer to home though. And even though it is a small company, and they would probably hire somebody as a 'replacement' if you go part time, is there growth potential so that if you wanted to return full time in a couple years, that may be an option then?

I also have to agree with PP when she said examine your budget very closely. Are there things you can cut to give yourself more savings/wiggle room (like saving for a car in the future?)

  • Lurker chiming in.  When would you have to make the decision?  Can you come back to the job FT and then go PT or do you have to make the decision before your mat leave?  The reason I say this is because I know every baby is different some go to bed early and some some don't.  My DD is one that goes to bed late.  I have about the same commute as you and the absolute earliest DD will go to bed is 8 but it is usually after 9 so I get plenty of time in the evening with her.  Just something to think about.

  • 45 minute commute one way isn't out of the normal.  If you really like your job I would keep it at 40 hours.  If you want the freedom to have a full day with your baby I would cut down to 32 hours since your income is basically used for building savings and retirement.
  • I moved to 28 days a week. Best decision EvER. I have 2 days a week home with kids
My little girl is growing up! (born 12/09) Little brother is here! (born 5/2012) Thank you Lord for my precious family!
