Clogged tear duct..

LT has had a clogged tear duct since he was born.. they kept telling me not to worry it would clear up on its own. They said 99% of the time nothing else needs to be done. Well he's 9 months now and his new Pedi said it should have cleared off by now. She referred us to the ENT clinic and explained they would probably poke a hole in the blockage. (Cue freaking out)

Anyone else deal with this? I'm going to do some google-ing too but sometimes stories from people you "know" is better! TIA

Re: Clogged tear duct..

  • When Lucy's was blocked we always did warm washcloth compresses and massaged gently. I imagine that'll be tricky with a 9 month old, but it's worth a shot.

He's had the blockage since he was born... we've tried the warm cloths and massaging (as much as we could anyways- he's ALWAYS hated it!) nothing has worked though so they are moving on to medical treatment for it. Sad

  • Sorry no advice here but I wanted to say sorry for what you are going through. I would be totally freaked out too if they said they were going to poke anything near my LO's eye! Oh and when consulting Dr. Google try to remember that they show the worst case scenario of everything so don't get too freaked out. I've found the best information on children's hospital and pediatrician websites. Good luck...I hope it ends up being no big deal!

  • I'm sorry it's been so long. Wow.

Both my babies have had it. Well, I assume it was clogged... Sealed shut With goop. I sprayed my breast milk in their eye and it cleared up.

I hope they can do something less invasive.

My brother had this. It did not clear up on it's own and he had to have an operation (24 years ago). It fixed him up, and now he can squirt milk out his eye. Well it doesn't really squirt, it just kind of dribbles out, but it's still cool.

Sorry you're dealing with it. Hopefully it can be fixed easily.

  • Cora had a clogged tear duct from about 2 weeks to 4 months old. At her 4 month appt, the doctor said that since it hadn't cleared up on its own, we should treat it. She gave us an ointment and it cleared up in about 24 hours and hasn't been back.
