Two Questions

1) What is your go-to snack/meal when nothing sounds good?

2) How do you deal with the first trimester anxiety? I feel like my wait just to see my family doctor and get an OB referral seems really long. I've always had anxiety issues but lately they are way worse; especially at night when I try and sleep.

Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

Re: Two Questions

  • 1. During 1st Tri, my go to snack was Starburst. : ) They were the only thing that sounded good and that stayed down actually. MS was awful 6w-15w.

    2. 1st Tri Anxiety is horrible. I wish I could say there is something you can do to make yourself feel better. There wasn't for me. Honestly, the waiting sucked and I also had some spotting which made it all that much worse. Just know that you are pregnant now and try not to stress. Take care of yourself. Exercise and eat well if you can. Find things to fill your time with. The first few weeks until our first appt was torture but it will be amazing the calm and overwhelming feeling you get when you hear that heartbeat for the first time. Hang in there LB! : ) Sending many thoughts and prayers for a H & H 9 months!

  • having patience during pregnancy is very difficult. since you already have anxiety issues, it might be wise to discuss with your doctor safe anxiety meds to take. this may be a case where the benefits outweigh the cons.

no go to snack/meal. whatever i could manage to think of that sounded good is what i ate. one night it was gusher fruit snacks and fountain soda.

    1. PB&J, mac & cheese, and crackers. Normally I would add soup to that list, but IMO it's too hot for that business right now.

    2. If you feel up to it, just staying busy with non-PR activities and exercise might help (if you can eat enough to make up for calories burned--not sure if you're able to do that based on #1). I don't know that I have suggestions for first tri anxiety specifically, though I certainly had trouble sleeping b/c of it. I had to fall asleep with the TV on to keep myself from thinking about PR things. Maybe start a new book? What kind of things normally help your anxiety?

When do you see your family doctor?

  • Snacks- Peanut butter & jelly, greek yogurt, easy mac, almonds, popcorn, apples, and lots of sour patch kids.

As far as anxiety, the weeks between appointments early on really was the worst for me mentally. I just tried to keep myself occupied with other things as best I could. I hung out with friends as much as possible since C was traveling a lot, but like Spin, nighttime was the worst. I also made a point to keep the tv on or try to read until I fell asleep. The less time I allowed myself to think about it, the better I was able to deal with things.

  • I am sorry you have to wait so long to see your doctor. Have you tried finding an OB? I would definitely bring up the anxiety to your doctor as it could become difficult to cope during your pregnancy or even post part um.

As for go to snacks, I ate anything I could but my main ones were almonds for the protein, applesauce, canned peaches and saltines. I kept almonds and crackers next to the bed and ate a handful everytime I woke up to pee and before I got out of bed in the morning. Also, be sure to stay hydrated!

  • I didn't really have much go-to snacks, it was whatever we had on hand.  I hated the waiting between appointments, especially the weeks before my first appointment.  It got better when I heard the heartbeat, and got to hear it at each appointment.

I also kept saying this phrase, and it really helped ease the anxiety.  "Today I am pregnant, Today I am happy, Today I am healthy, and Today is all that matters."

When do you see your family doctor?

I just joined a gym and had been working out which helped a lot. On good days, I'll still go walk or swim :)

I see my doctor on August 6th. Apparently she is out of the office in July. I have this happen all the time with her before.  It always irritated me. Now I am pissed because once again, she isn't around when I need her.

Go to food in first tri were almonds and bagels.  But that's not really sustainable or healthy. So I quickly switched to overnight oats or eggs for breakfast and a salad with protein for lunch. Protein is really key.

I had some melt downs in first tri, but I think the most important thing to focus on is that you can't worry about things you can't control. It's hard to not, but just focus on keeping yourself healthy and controlling what you can control.

  • I didn't have much of an appetite until about a week or two ago, but I stuck to basic snacks. Almonds, yogurt, granola bars and fruit. None of it sounded good but I knew I needed something. Meals were a different story. I would just eat whatever I could tolerate that day, and hardly enjoyed it.

The other ladies have already said it best I think, but first tri anxiety is probably just par for the course. I was a nervous wreck until my first ultrasound (at 8 weeks). I will confess, I took 12 pregnancy tests between my first BFP and that appointment. It's kind of crazy but seeing it there made me feel better. I don't know that I would recommend that because it could make you anxious beforehand, but it worked for easing my nerves anyway.

I'm sure you're planning on discussing it with your doctor since you've already had anxiety issues. Each milestone will make you feel better, but you will continue to be anxious until the next one unfortunately. But it really does get better. Just remember that today, you are pregnant.

  • I never had m/s or anything so I snacked on whatever I wanted.  Throughout my entire pregnancy, I wanted citrus fruit, so I ate a lot of oranges, clementines, and grapefruit.

I'm sorry to say it, but the anxiety is going to be rough.  You've already had anxiety problems, so I'm sure the pregnancy is only going to make it worse Congratulations, by the way (I don't think I told you that yet!).  I was incredibly anxious in between appointments.  It doesn't get much easier.  It gets a LITTLE better as you progress, but it's still there (at least it was for me, anyway).  Once I could feel him moving consistently, there was much more reassurance, but early on, when you have no idea what's going on, it's difficult.  I was nervous for every single u/s, every single doppler check, every single appointment.  I was constantly worried that something was going to have changed since the last appointment.  Hang in there and like CCH said, maybe discuss some medication options with your doctor!

  • 1)  It varies.  Kinda whatever I'm in the mood for at the time.  Fruit salad is one of the only things that hasn't disgusted me at some point so far.  Also, Wendy's Frosties.  YUM.

    2)  No amount of worrying is gonna change anything.  Just remember that most pregnancies end in life birth.  The risk of miscarriage really isn't high, and it'll go down quite a bit once you hear the heartbeat.  Hang in there!

  • 1) food is survival mode. Eat what's tastes good. My doc said as long as I was hydrated and could keep my vitamin down baby will steal what it needs from me.  Food will sound good again and I will eventually start gaining weight.

    2) no suggestions on anxiety. I'm still anxious and my husband thinks I'm crazy. I also peed on like 12 tests before I had my first appointment!

    1) With DS, I drank a good amount of ginger ale.  This time, I have no real aversions, so I am trying to eat healthy snacks, like yogurt, low fat cheese and fruit.  At your stage, just eat what you can. Baby doesn't need much.

    2) I had post partum anxiety with DS. I went to see a therapist and she gave me some good self talk strategies.  I still use them when I get worked up about stuff. Is there someone you can see?

    2. Zoloft and yoga.  I tried to keep myself busy and excited by reading baby books and looking at baby stuff.

That stinks. However, your mental health is important, so I hope you are able to reschedule soon. Is there an office that offers evening and weekend hours? I'm not sure what your work schedule is like, but maybe if there was more flexibility things would be easier?

It took me 8 months to make the call and I regret not calling sooner. It then took almost a month after that to get an appointment.

  • 1. When my ms was really bad all I could eat was red Gatorade and plain/salted potato chips. Sometimes French fries.

    2. I have had some rough times this pg. I will say, I try to take it one day at a time. Just get through today. I try not to think about things that give me anxiety. Focus on things I can control, things I am thankful for. I take a lot of deep breaths, close my eyes, relax my muscles.

I once heard that thoughts can kind of wear a rut in your brain. If you keep thinking anxiety provoking thoughts, then you think more and more about them. I have found that if I stop the thought and think of something relaxing, like petting my cat in bed on Saturday morning and stay with that thought, then it stops the anxiety from escalating. It was very hard to do at first, but got easier.

  • Carbs. All the carbs. Mostly bagels with PB. That's all I could eat until about 2pm.

The phrase "today I'm pregnant and I love my baby" did nothing for me. At all. It's like, wtf, today is just today....it's the rest of the days that I'm worried about! So basically I just lived for my doctor's appts. I focused on work and school and being at home. I tried not to think of the what-ifs, and if I did, I tried not to dwell. It's hard. Really hard. But it's a part of pregnancy and you do what you can to make it through. Find what it is for you. If need be, meds might be the way to go. There's no shame in that at all. Plus, to be honest there is 2nd and 3rd tri anxiety, too. You need to figure out now what can get you through. Nine months seems like a long time, but it's really not. The first weeks seem endless. Like the quote says, "The days are long but the years are short." Make the best of your pregnancy and enjoy it. I already miss it. Good luck!!

ETA: Weren't you seeing an RE? Why not go that route and get seen earlier by them, have betas drawn, and make yourself a little more at ease. You will likely get early ultrasounds, too, which is what made it more bearable for me.

  • 1. My go-to snacks/foods I could tolerate were Cheerios, oranges, hot dogs, and bagels, during first tri.

    2.  Working out. Talking to the girls here. Keeping busy - reading baby books that reassured me that once we'd heard a heartbeat, I had a greater chance of everything being ok, etc.

    2) I am probably not much help on this, but do you have a doctor/therapist you could talk to about using some focus and calming exercises? Do you do yoga?
