Incorrect information about home on Zillow

So, my husband and I purchased a home this Spring.  I was surfing the web and noticed that the home is listed on zillow.com.  In the price history section, the website lists the correct purchase price as well as sale date.  However, it also mentions that it was purchased as part of a "foreclosure auction".  This is not the case, it was a conventional sale and the sellers (per the HUD) took away over $350K from the sale.

In looking through the website, they say that they get their information from "publically available" sources.  Over the past month, I've flagged the transaction as incorrect (twice) and emailed zillow customer service.  I've not received any response from zillow on exactly where they've gotten this information from, or how to correct it.

My question is- is it absolutely necessary that I get this corrected on their website?  If yes, how to a reach someone who can help with this?

TIA!

Re: Incorrect information about home on Zillow

  • Zillow is notorious for its inaccuracies.  Forget Zillow.  But do check with your local recording agency (city/county clerks office etc) that the information that they have is correct.
  • PP is correct. Zillow is not necessarily the most accurate source for home data. I used to do marketing for a real estate company so I used to deal with this stuff all the time (another fun thing is that sometimes websites like that will suddenly start showing a home as being on the market a year or so after it's been sold and other silly stuff like that!).

If you're really worried about it, I'd make sure that your county records reflect all the correct information and if you really want you can try to ask you real estate agent if they could send off an email to Zillow asking them to correct their data. In my experience they usually respond more to an actual agent or someone who works in a real estate office. Good luck!

  • Zillow lists my house as 4BR/2.5 BA when in fact it is 5BR/4.5BA.  I wouldn't put too much stock in what they say.
  • As the PP have stated, Zillow normally has wrong information about houses. I would not worry about it at all. Just make sure everything was filed with your city/county.
