Moms- Questions for Ped

The Pediatrician's office we are hoping to have care for our LO has a new parents info session this weekend and I'm completely drawing a blank as to what questions we should be asking. Halp!

Re: Moms- Questions for Ped

  • we didn't interview pedi's. but we've gone through a few already. some of the things i look to ask about now: does the office close for lunch (i find that to be irritating that i can't call from noon-1pm, and even then those damn nurses would turn the phones off at 11:45 and piss me off even more); is there a sick and well side; are there walk in hours or designated sick/no appointment hours.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • How many pedis are in the practice? Will you see one or rotate between them all?

What are the hours of the practice and who do you call after hours?

How soon can you be seen for a sick visit?

Is there a separate office/waiting room for sick visits or are all kiddos together?

Vaccination schedule? Are they willing to do a delayed scheduled (if that's what you want)?

Views on breastfeeding vs formula feeding?

Views on when to start solids?

ETA: Is there a lactation consultant on staff? (Helpful if you're 45 min from the hospital but only 10 min from the pedi, like me!)

  • If your going to the place I go to they have all kinds of info at the meeting. Other than the normal questions listed above I asked about BLW vs purees, resources for ADD, if they promote cereal in bottles for not STTN, if they often have interns, if they have an after hours line, what hospitals they visit, and when the first appt. was.

  • Does someone from the office come to visit the baby in the hospital?  Do they charge for after hour calls (mine does, blah!)?  Are there certain doctors in the practice that see the younger children and others that see only the older children or does the child have the same doctor as he/she grows up?

  • Thanks for the input, ladies! I definitely hadn't thought of some of these and is definitely very helpful food for thought.
