So, I took the plunge...

I wasn't sure what to title this post.

I called my doctor's office to schedule a WTH appointment. She told me last March that if I wasn't pregnant by the end of the summer to call her if I wanted to. I got August 13th for a Fertility Consultment. It's been 14 months since I went off birth control. In the beginning, I was just using a random app and was tracking cycle length. In March I signed up for FF and started charting and all that. Some months our timing has been better than others. And I'm sure we've probably missed ovulation by a couple of days some days as well. Then of course the one month I was charting and we were sex-crazy, I don't don't think I ovulated. Ugh!

I don't know if my cycles would be considered irregular or not. Since January, I've had cycles that range from 23 days to 29 days. I know last September, I even had a cycle of 31 or so days. I know that they can flucuate, but don't know when they would consider "irregular".

We'll see what my doctor says next month.

Good luck!!  Hopefully the meeting goes well.  So is that with your OB or with a RE?  Not sure how your insurance works and all that, if you have to be referred to a RE, but I would definitely recommend mine.  He is on the north side, but I'm not sure there are too many on our side of town anyway.  I can give you his info if you'd like.

I was sent straight to the RE, since we are MFI.. but I would also suggest being referred to one early to get all your testing done with them vs the OB.  But that's just my opinion!

    Keep us posted!

  • Will do.  I'm seeing my OB.  I see Dr. Jessica Bell at Southside OB-GYN (located at St. Francies).  All I know is that there are a couple of doctors within the practice the practice infertility, but I'm assuming they are not REs.  I don't know too much about them.  I'm not sure how insurance will work with all that either!

Did you talk to your insurance before you went to see your RE, or did you let your RE's office tell you what was covered and what wasn't?  I believe some insurance will pay for some RE stuff until it's actually technically infertility.

I called my insurance.. they don't offer any infertililty coverage.  So I knew upfront everything was going to be OOP.  Even just an infertility consultation with my OB was not covered.  So, you may want to call your insurance before your appointment and see, just incase it will be OOP.  It's rare to have infertility coverage.. so consider yourself lucky if they cover anything!!

If you go see a RE, they will run your insurance and check.  They are really good about letting you know up front what you will have to pay for, that way you aren't shocked when they ask for payment.   And regarding treatments, you meet with a financial consultant that will go over every cost with you, so you'll get a breakdown.

If you don't have coverage, and you are curious what my appointments have cost, I don't mind sharing.

  • All I can add is I'm sorry you have to see an RE and good luck!
  • Thanks E.

I called both of my insurance companies yesterday, and neither one of them cover infertility diagnostics or treatment (which I wasn't surprised).  My primary told me that if my doctor's office sends it over as an Infertility Consultment, that would be rejected.

I did send a message to my doctor's office this morning asking them what to expect during the consultment and also how that appointment will be coded/sent to insurance since we're at the beginning stages.  We'll see!

That stinks that you don't have any coverage.  I wish insurance companies would at least cover a portion of testing or something.  Again, good luck!
