Riviera Maya in early September?

We are planning a vacation for the 2nd week in September, leaving from Philly and heading somewhere tropical to an AI resort.

It's hurricane season, so we should play it safe and go to Aruba, but there aren't as many AIs to choose from and the rooms are more basic.  Plus we can't get a direct flight.

Riviera Maya AIs *dirt cheap* as are direct flights...probably because people no better than to go there at that time of year. I'm willing to risk a day or two of rain....we can hide out in the spa.  I just want to make sure it won't be a complete bust. Has anyone been to the Riviera Maya / Cancun area around September? Any feedback?

Re: Riviera Maya in early September?

  • Nobody on these boards can predict what the weather will be like for you- or if a hurricane will arrive the same week that you are there.  If another nestie went in September with successful weather last year, that doesn't really help you for this year.

Instead, I would prepare yourself for the possibility of a hurricane.  Look into trip insurance or reservations that are refundable and/or transferable.

Also, have you considered a cruise instead?  If a hurricane is heading for your destination, the cruiselines will reroute your ship to islands that aren't as likely to be affected.

  • im not a fan of aruba and will make my 13th visit to cancun/rm this coming december (13 over the course of 10 years). go. get yourself insurance in case there's a hurricane, and go and enjoy yourselves. the area is unusual in that it rarely rains over the entire riviera maya (4 hours driving time worth of area so not small). you can generally head somewhere else ona day trip if it rains where you are. ive had that happen quite a few times. thre's no way to guarantee the weather anywhere. aruba does get bands of rains/remnants of storms and has been hit a few times so it's not sunny every day.

i much prefered curacao by the way. curacao had such a unique dutch island feel-aruba wasn't even close-it felt so vanilla.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • The cruise might be the best idea if your worried about weather, usually they have spas and hit up many ports in the Rivera Maya. I just got back from a 10 day stay in Cozumel and went to Playa De Carmen and there are many AI resorts in that area.

It was supposed to rain 8 out of 10 days we were in Coz and we only got rained out 1 day and it was just for an hour or two it poured then was fine. It sprinkled on and off or had short showers 2 other days but not even enough to ruin a day at the beach. If your set on that area for that time of year just get insurance and make a backup plan in the event bad weather does go that way or do a cruise to the same area.

  • Thanks Elin & Lithe! We are definitely going with the trip insurance if we decide on Riviera Maya, which is where I'm leaning.  I like Aruba, but just feel like we are getting more 'bang for the buck' in Mexico.  I think it's worth the risk of potential bad weather. The chances for a hurricane are relatively slim, and if it rains, we can take a day trip or book messages.

I wasn't expecting someone to predict a hurricane for me, or give me a guarantee that the rain would hold just because it happened to hold off for them in a prior year.
