Little man will be 5 months old on Sunday (gasp!). We have been having issues with him spitting up. He is now strictly formula fed now. We were using Similac Advance (which I prefer), switched him to Enfamil and then on a whim, Target's version of Enfamil (which he seemed to be tolerating well but is now spitting up again). We never had issues with him spitting up before. I spoke to the pedi and she didn't seem too concerned because he's not running a fever and his diaper dirt is normal. His bottle uptake seems to be up in terms of how often he eats. He is also getting up 2x during the night to eat. The pedi suggested we start solid foods closer to his 6 month birthday, which I am totally fine with. However, I am starting to wonder if maybe he is ready to start foods and is drinking too much milk over the course of the day to get full. Any suggestions?
Re: Feeding Question
Ditto LD. Try more frequent, smaller feeds. He may be going through a growth spurt and is taking in a lot and then spits up because he's too full. As long as he's not grunting, arching or tensing when he spits up, I don't think it's reflux.
In terms of solids, they are only meant to be exploratory and fun from about 6-10 months. You still want to make milk/formula the priority even after starting solids because that's where they are still getting the bulk of their fat and calories from. Yes, you may be filling the baby up with purees/solids but it's not the same.

Can you tell I am new at this? I should have said cereals around his 6 month birthday, not solid foods. There is definetly a big difference!
We use several different brands of bottle- Tommee Tippee (mostly), Avent and Similac. Could he need a bigger nipple? We are using level 1 right now- slow flow. I will check and see if he spits up with one brand more than the other. I also just bought a Dr. Browns which I haven't tried yet.
Interestingly, he doesn't spit up during his overnight feedings.
Right now, he drinks 4oz at a time by his own choosing. If we make a bigger bottle, he stops at 4oz but then starts fussing for more an hour or so later.
Could teething also be an issue?
Thanks for the tips!
We skipped cereal and purees and went right to soft solids at 6 months. Check out Baby Led Weaning (BLW) - so glad we did it!
I don't suggest a bigger nipple because he'll only drink it faster and you might have more spit up.

ditto this 100%. Cereals don't really have much in the way of nutritional value.
Thanks! I will look into this, as it seems very interesting. I was a little skeptical about the cereals after reading they had no nutritional value. Who knew? Little guy was at my mom's yesterday afternoon and I told her to try giving him smaller feeds. This may be the solution, since she said it didn't happen once while he was there. Thanks for all your input and putting my mind at ease!
